Every night in northern Uganda, approximately 40,000 children travel on foot to downtown areas of cities and to camps for the displaced to find places to sleep where they will not be kidnapped, raped or conscripted to fight in the rebel army's campaign against the government. This so-called "night commute" will be reenacted in the Antelope Valley and worldwide in an attempt to create awareness for the children's plight. The "Global Night Commute," as it is called, is organized nationally by three young American filmmakers who traveled to Africa in spring 2003.
Within Uganda's borders, they found that the region's children suffer at the hands of the Lord's Resistance Army members, which, according to a 2005 UNICEF report, have "mutilated and maimed civilians, cutting off lips, ears and noses and chopping off hands."
UNICEF said children have "suffered disproportionately in this conflict.
"As many as 25,000 children have been abducted by the LRA since the conflict began, for use as soldiers, sex slaves and porters. 7,500 are girls, with 1,000 having conceived children during captivity. An unknown number have been killed."
Additionally, Uganda shares borders with Sudan - a country where genocide has become a matter of fact. Rebel forces are estimated to have murdered 400,000 civilians in the Darfur region.
