Ferris Bueller's Day Off: 20th Anniversary Edition
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | 5/3/06 | Iain Mckay

Posted on 05/05/2006 12:16:08 PM PDT by qam1

Matthew Broderick stars in the '80s teen comedy about rebelling in style.

Every kid has known a Ferris Bueller, that kid with the zen-like state of mind who seems impossibly mature, infuriatingly confident, never less than charming and usually gets what he wants. And this being the infamous decade of greed, that means conspicuous consumption.

Our '80s Ferris is played with great style by a young Matthew Broderick who, tired of school drudgery, borrows a Ferrari and convinces some friends to accompany him to Chicago for the day.

Naturally all this is to be accomplished without anyone noticing, without any consequences and with maximum cool, a sleight of hand only a Ferris-like state of mind is capable of. Teen rebellion with style.

Wanna feel old? Students entering college this fall were born the year "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", "Die Hard", and "Big", were made.

Thanks. I didn't think I could feel any worse than I did a while ago.

You should be banned for making me feel so old.

Didn't we all have a science or math teacher just like that, lol.

Even though he was much more animated and entertaining than Ben's character, I was always reminded of my 7th grade science teacher, Mr. Berube, whose slogan was "I mean what I say and say what I mean." The guy had actually gone with Shckleton on one of his late Antarctic epeditions (long, long after the Endurance incident) and was a font of historical and science knowledge.

What a classic. Just watched it with my pre-teen kids.

Awesome soundtrack too.

I already felt old when I found out that soemthing like 90% of the first crew of USS Reagan was too young to have any meaningful memory of his presidency. I, on the other hand, remember discussing with fellow elementary school classmates just how badly Carter was going to go down, and my parents weren't even conservatives.

That's it. I'm hitting abuse on that post.

I know Charlie Sheen is a total loon, but he always cracked me up in that movie. When he and Jennifer Grey are in the police station.

"Drugs?"
"Thank you, no. I'm straight."

I'd also throw-in "The Freshman" where MB plays opposite Marlon Brando. Total spoof of "The Godfather".

Thanks qam1 !!!

I did love Ben Stein in that movie. I *am* getting sick and tired of the 80s being referred to as the age of greed...when we all know who the greedy ones were: the Democrats who didnt want their pet project budgets cut so more money could be spent protecting this country and calling Gorbachev's bluff on nuclear weapons.

Quintessential 80s movies:

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Sixteen Candles
Breakfast Club
St. Elmo's Fire
Pretty in Pink
Back to the Future - "you made a time machine...out of a DeLorean?!"

80s forever!!

LOL! Funny how that happens! My favorite scene from the movie:

Snooty Maitre D': I appreciate your understanding.

Ferris: Don't think twice. It's understanding that makes it possible for people like us to tolerate a person like yourself.

Maitre D': Thank you.

Ferris: Don't mention it.

Kids entering college this year were born AFTER "Duck Tales" started AND after Shelley Long left Cheers!

Simone : Um he's sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavours last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Teacher : Thank you Simone.

Simone : No problem whatsoever.

"Duck Tales"

I don't know what that is. Is it a cartoon? Guess I'm even older then I thought. :-(

I'd like to add "Uncle Buck" to that list.
