Why Should We Stop THE DA VINCI CODE?
MovieguideĀ® ^ | May 19, 2006 | Dr. Ted Baehr

War on Christianity has been declared. On which side of the battle line will you stand?

The movie version of Dan Brown's book, THE DA VINCI CODE, is now in theaters. Although the movie significantly waters down the unrelenting, anti-Christian attacks and virulent paganism and goddess worship of the novel, it promotes the book and contains enough falsehoods and scurrilous conjecture to distort the truth about Jesus Christ, the Bible, Christianity, and God. That, coupled with the book’s popularity and some Christians’ ignorance about their faith, leads us to believe that the movie, and the attention it draws, will increase people’s hatred and prejudice against Christians and Christianity.

If this sounds like an overreaction, consider this:

* THE DA VINCI CODE presents blasphemous fiction as fact in a deceptive fashion

* THE DA VINCI CODE book denies the divinity of Jesus Christ, claiming He was no more than a mortal prophet, and the movie says it doesn't matter whether Jesus was divine or not

* THE DA VINCI CODE alleges Jesus married Mary Magdalene with whom He had a child

* THE DA VINCI CODE falsely claims the Christian church has historically hidden these “facts” through deception, murder and conspiracy

THE DA VINCI CODE novel has already caused great harm. Over 45 million copies of Dan Brown’s book have been sold, and it’s been a staple on worldwide best-seller lists for two years and counting. Brown, however, doesn’t present it as an overt work of fiction. A simple statement in the prologue reads, “All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents and secret rituals in this novel are accurate.”

Many Christians are already theologically malnourished; how will they withstand the assault of distortions, lies and bigotry from THE DA VINCI CODE?

We must combat THE DA VINCI CODE’s attack on Jesus, the Bible and the very integrity of the Christian faith.

On which side of the battle line will you stand?

Note: See the News and Articles sections of www.movieguide.org for more analysis of Dan Brown's book, and see Current Reviews at www.movieguide.org for a review of the movie version.

What are Christians afraid of? What's wrong with presenting all theories and letting people make up their own minds?

The 'theories' are not 'theories', they are dispoven slander. This story attacks real people and the religion of millions and millions. Allowing this blasphemous slander to stand without being attacked is wrong.

Here's a better idea, people should take 10 minutes and talk to their children/friends/neighbors about the importance of being able to use rational thought to reach a conclusion not based purely on emotion.

Absolutely!

Why Should We Stop THE DA VINCI CODE?

Oh? "We" are going to stop it? Maybe we can burn the books, and all copies of the film. The more hysterics over this movie and book come out, the more ridiculous 'Christians'look. Organized religion is a crutch that not everyone takes up, if you want to avoid the book and movie, and anything else that offends you, fine. Otherwise stay out of my library, video store,TV channels, bedroom, and any place else you feel compelled to try to push your brand of religion on the rest of us. (Not necessarily directed at you Simi Valley Tom, just a genral statement)

You think that is something? Look at what Al Gore has done with the Internet.

Just my opinion, but I think most folks are smarter than you give them credit for.

Do you agree with the statement that anything that doesn't exalt God is by nature blasphemous?

Someone who feels the need to "stop" this movie must have a weak and insecure faith indeed.

We are probably in agreement, Always. But let me just clarify my point --

The title of this post is "We must stop the Da Vinci Code" -

Presumably that means the author wants to prevent it from being shown or prevent people from watching it. Right? I disagree. Criticize all you want. Exercise your freedom of speech. And let other people exercise their freedoms.

Oh please, if the author of the book states that it's fiction, how could the movie be anything else?

This sad American fact of having to apologize for every perceived slight against any and everything is just silly.

Some freepers are sadly starting to sound like DUers sounded when discussing The Passion of the Christ.

I'm really proud of FR. So far, you're the only person on this thread who thinks drawing further attention to this stinker by boycotts or protests or taking it on is a good thing.

Zealots like Ted Baehr and a few stuffy cardinals at the Vatican are marginalized.

We don't live in a theocracy and if that is what they want to put in the film then so be it. I do believe in ratings for violence and sexuality to protect children but us adults can go and watch what we want unless its pornography that violates children etc.

We don't want to go the route where we have religous mullahs like in Iran that tell us what we can or can't watch based on a religous doctrine. If you don't like it that is fine and your right to exclaim your views and maybe its an opportunity to push for a movie and/or publication that reflects what you want to see published about Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is always a great storyline for what a shining example of the glory of God.

My post was silly, without substance, and factually vacant. It was also sarcastic satire highlighting how evolutionists view the cries of creationists that demand ID be taught in science class. In fact, I basically just substituted 'Christianity' and 'Christians' for 'Darwinism' and 'Darwinist' in a common argument form ID supporters.

The point I am trying to make is that some Christians have no hesitation to do exactly what they accuse others of doing.

One thing I don't get -- maybe somebody could explain it. Is this whole flap about a claim that Jesus was married and had a kid? Even if he had been married and had a kid, what difference would it make? Does it affect Christianity in some significant way?

If somebody could enlighten me, I would appreciate it.

Exactly where did I call for a boycott or even protests? I missed that. I just think the movie needs to be called out for what it is.

Replace all the Christian references in this article with Muslim references and it reads just like all the crazy whackjob jihadi writing we see.
