I Hate The Half-Hour Lunch That Requires You To Stay A Half-Hour Extra!
FREE REPUBLIC | 27 May 2006 | EEE

Why can't employers just pay for your half-hour lunch? Don't you hate working 8-4:30 or 7:30-4 and crap? You get two 15-minute breaks anyway in this time period, what's the big deal?

Wouldn't be easier if employers just paid you for lunch and a single 15 minute break? It would make the scheduling easier, no?

You get lunch?

Better grab a bite quick before the kitties eat it all.

Quit whining.

I work 8 straight hours on my shift. Lunch or dinner is eaten at my work station. The only 'breaks' I get are when I go to the bathroom to relieve myself. Even then I'm carrying a portable radio so I don't miss any calls.

If you didn't negotiate this before you took the job, you get no sympathy from me.

I don't even remember the last time I had a lunch hour. Where I worked, we ate at our desk taking about 15 minutes just to eat. If work needed to be done, so be it.

At least you probably get to eat decent food at lunch.

I live on a compound and only get one choice. The chow hall. For every meal. Every day. Day in and day out.

And it sucks.

If it weren't for the soft ice cream machine, it would be a total disaster.

That reminds me...it's time for lunch now. (Groan!)

I've been in the workforce for almost a decade and I'm still waiting for my first lunch hour. :)

It usually takes at least 30 minutes for my driver to get me to the restaurant, depending on what my assistant chose for the day.

I guess I think more in terms of morning, afternoon and evening.

Although I don't choose my own wines, I understand the time of day is important to the staff.

ansel12 must be a government employee.

But I AM astonished at how many people say they get no lunch period at all. Honestly, that's the wrong way to live. People need breaks, even naps!

"ansel12 must be a government employee."

Get real, only a plumber could command that kind of wealth.

Heck, sign up for welfare and get your check in the mail without working at all. Of course, it is only $250/mo. That's all you are worth when you are not working, if even that.

My sentiments, exactly! I eat in front of the sick kids in my school nurse office because I don't get a lunch break like the teacher's do. I'm theoretically supposed to, but when the kids get back to the classroom and start complaining of this or that, then right down they come...some with a note saying they are not to return to the classroom! Gee, thanks! This is my lunch break, which is supposed to be duty-free! In the whole school year, I might get 10-15 days of lunch without kids. At least our lunch time is a paid one!

Your vanity post may seem silly to some people but this subject has really irked me for years.

Yes, I hate that half hour. I've never been in a position to negotiate lunch or no lunch with an employer. Even with "flex time" you have to factor in lunch. In all my working life I have rarely ever, ever taken a half hour lunch. It would have been some rare occasion. I'm not going to go and just sit somewhere for a half hour.

I never understood this famous "9-5" mantra. That would be a no lunch 8 hour day which would be fine with me but it is not very common.

You could get a union and then your life would become really miserable as you reflect on the money you pay in dues going the Hillary Clinton campaign.

What really sucks about the half-hour lunch is trying to get that third martini squeezed in.

I work four 10 hour shifts. We get no breaks or a break for lunch. But our management lets someone leave and get lunch for others. Our jobs requires us to monitor every flight in the air, so they cant schedule breaks. We watch eachothers flights while they go and get food for us. I would rather have no break in exchange for three days off instead of two..

We have the option of taking our two 15-minute breaks with our 1/2 hour luch (officially). Unofficially, we can take as long as we need/want for lunch as long as all but 1/2 hour of it is off the clock.
