Con: Fund my sex change

Not satisfied with his taxpayer-funded female hormones and laser hair removal, a convicted killer-turned-transsexual is again asking the state to pony up to complete his transformation into a woman.

Robert Kosilek, who is serving life in prison for strangling his wife, was back in federal court yesterday, again demanding that the state Department of Correction pay for his sex-change operation.

A similar bid was denied in 2002, and his latest attempt has infuriated Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey.

“I strongly oppose using taxpayer dollars to fund a sex-change operation for any prisoner, but especially a convicted murderer,” Healey said.

“Should taxpayer money be used for a sex-change operation? I think the answer is a resounding ‘no,’ ” she said. “He shouldn’t be receiving any special treatment whatsoever.”

Kosilek, 57, claims he is suicidal and needs the sex change for “medical” reasons.

A psychiatrist testified in federal court that Kosilek - who is now known as Michelle - will kill himself if the surgery is not allowed.

In 2002, Judge Mark Wolf ordered the DOC to provide him with female hormones but refused to order the surgery. Kosilek has also received therapy and laser hair removal treatments behind bars but wants the state to pick up the tab for the operation.

“We ask that gender identity disorder be treated like any other medical condition,” said Kosilek’s attorney, Frances Cohen.

Kosilek, who wears his hair long and tucked behind his ears, has developed larger breasts since beginning hormone treatments.

He has testified that he suffered from gender identity disorder since he was 3 years old and had attempted suicide twice. He has also said he tried to castrate himself.

The con began his crusade for a taxpayer-funded sex change after his 1990 arrest for strangling his 36-year-old wife, Cheryl. Her body was dumped in a parking lot.

Kosilek was convicted in 1993 of first-degree murder and is serving life without parole.

DOC lawyers argued that it would be a security risk to allow the operation because Kosilek would likely be targeted for attack by other inmates.

Robert Kosilek, now known as Michelle, is shown in court in 1993.

Girls will be boys and boys will be girls, it's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world, except for Lola.

I'd be happy to take a 12 guage shotgun and remove the offending organs for him, but that's about as far as I am willing to go.

Like most here, I fail to see how this is our problem.

What do we do if prisoners start threatening suicide unless they're set free?

Citizens for Ltd Taxation and Govt

From May 2005:
"Hard core criminals in our state prisons. You pay for their food, clothing and general medical care. Now, you may end up paying for their sex change surgery. I-Team reporter Joe Bergantino investigates what critics are calling a massive waste of taxpayer dollars....

"The I-Team has learned there are twelve prisoners in our correction system who have either been diagnosed with or are being diagnosed for gender identity disorder. Four prisoners are receiving hormone treatments. So far, their medical care and lawsuits have cost you tens of thousands of dollars. Sex changes for all of them would cost you at least a quarter of a million dollars....

"Barbara Anderson, Citizens for Limited Taxation: 'What bothers me about that? What doesn’t bother me about that? I can’t even imagine seriously considering this. Never mind doing this. Never mind paying for it.' "So why is state funding for prisoner sex changes -- something insurance companies won’t pay for -- even a possibility? "Blame it on the federal court. That’s where Michelle, once Robert, Kosilek took her case...."

once we pay to clip the freak it will require a new prison.

can't have a gal in a guy prison and can't have a guy in a gal prison.

i eagerly await the decision of some queer judge in this matter, if not the entire sjc of mass.

this state is a freak show.

He's right up there with Dr. Richard Sharpe up here on the North Shore of Boston--murdered his wife. Liked to dress in drag.

"Two suicide attempts, a romance and a pending trial. Since Richard Sharpe was sentenced, a fellow inmate told authorities that the former millionaire dermatologist offered him $100,000 to murder Robert Weiner, the assistant district attorney who successfully prosecuted him. Shortly after being charged with solicitation to commit murder, Sharpe attempted to kill himself by hanging himself with his shoelaces. Seven months later, in October 2002, he made a second suicide attempt, and has been in Bridgewater State Hospital ever since. Sharpe has found support from New Jersey nurse Debbie Keiser-Myers, who wrote him after watching the case on Court TV and has become his romantic pen pal. As Sharpe awaits trial on the solicitation charge, his two young children are at the center of a heated custody battle between Sharpe's adult daughter, Shannon, and his slain wife's sister, Kathleen Lembo."
