Not satisfied with his taxpayer-funded female hormones and laser hair removal, a convicted killer-turned-transsexual is again asking the state to pony up to complete his transformation into a woman.
Robert Kosilek, who is serving life in prison for strangling his wife, was back in federal court yesterday, again demanding that the state Department of Correction pay for his sex-change operation.
A similar bid was denied in 2002, and his latest attempt has infuriated Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey.
I strongly oppose using taxpayer dollars to fund a sex-change operation for any prisoner, but especially a convicted murderer, Healey said.
Should taxpayer money be used for a sex-change operation? I think the answer is a resounding no, she said. He shouldnt be receiving any special treatment whatsoever.
Kosilek, 57, claims he is suicidal and needs the sex change for medical reasons.
A psychiatrist testified in federal court that Kosilek - who is now known as Michelle - will kill himself if the surgery is not allowed.
In 2002, Judge Mark Wolf ordered the DOC to provide him with female hormones but refused to order the surgery. Kosilek has also received therapy and laser hair removal treatments behind bars but wants the state to pick up the tab for the operation.
We ask that gender identity disorder be treated like any other medical condition, said Kosileks attorney, Frances Cohen.
Kosilek, who wears his hair long and tucked behind his ears, has developed larger breasts since beginning hormone treatments.
He has testified that he suffered from gender identity disorder since he was 3 years old and had attempted suicide twice. He has also said he tried to castrate himself.
The con began his crusade for a taxpayer-funded sex change after his 1990 arrest for strangling his 36-year-old wife, Cheryl. Her body was dumped in a parking lot.
Kosilek was convicted in 1993 of first-degree murder and is serving life without parole.
DOC lawyers argued that it would be a security risk to allow the operation because Kosilek would likely be targeted for attack by other inmates.
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls, it's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world, except for Lola.
I'd be happy to take a 12 guage shotgun and remove the offending organs for him, but that's about as far as I am willing to go.
A rusty ax would work also.
Like most here, I fail to see how this is our problem.
What do we do if prisoners start threatening suicide unless they're set free?
From May 2005:
"Hard core criminals in our state prisons. You pay for their food, clothing and general medical care. Now, you may end up paying for their sex change surgery. I-Team reporter Joe Bergantino investigates what critics are calling a massive waste of taxpayer dollars....
"The I-Team has learned there are twelve prisoners in our correction system who have either been diagnosed with or are being diagnosed for gender identity disorder. Four prisoners are receiving hormone treatments. So far, their medical care and lawsuits have cost you tens of thousands of dollars. Sex changes for all of them would cost you at least a quarter of a million dollars....
"Barbara Anderson, Citizens for Limited Taxation: 'What bothers me about that? What doesnt bother me about that? I cant even imagine seriously considering this. Never mind doing this. Never mind paying for it.' "So why is state funding for prisoner sex changes -- something insurance companies wont pay for -- even a possibility? "Blame it on the federal court. Thats where Michelle, once Robert, Kosilek took her case...."
this state is a freak show.
How much can an aspirin and a meat cleaver cost?
Give suicide one more try. Third times a charm!
