Because of the fame of his father, Dale Jr. hasn't owned his own name, or the rights to his own signature, for the past three years.
Instead, Earnhardt's stepmother Teresa -- the third and last of his father's wives -- controls those rights, even as Dale Jr.'s name has been featured on everything from cake decorating products to baby bibs.

KEYWORDS:
This Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will drive a "throwback car" painted to look just like one his father drove in 1974. But as he faces his sixth Father's Day without his dad around, Dale Jr. might not be entirely thankful that he bears his papa's name. Because of the fame of his father, Dale Jr. hasn't owned his own name, or the rights to his own signature, for the past three years.

This is a bizarre story.

Jr must have been naive and also still in shock that he didn't have good advice on that. Also he may have felt he was doing his dad a favor.

I think this happens, in a broader term, more than many would like to believe. One can be very good in his chosen field, yet have no business sense at all.

Hey, thanks for the ping. That is truly bizarro. I think Teresa looks out for his namesake tho, doesn't she?

Teresa probably didn't outsmart Dale Jr. But she had the bucks to hire lawyers who did.
I don't know what the relationship between these two people are, but it's not hard to predict that it will get strained.

I don't know if it even goes to that degree. Teresa was the one that did the marketing, not DE. Jr may have just followed in his Dad's footsteps.

Thanks for the ping. Nice to see the world respects Dale, Jr. enough to refer to him as "matured". I always thought it would be pretty tough to be Dale Earnhardt's kid - especially now that the 'old man' is gone. What a burden.
