Diana death photo sparks outrage
Herald Sun ^ | 14 July 2006

AN Italian magazine today sparked uproar in the UK by publishing a picture of the late Princess Diana in the wreckage of the car crash that killed her.

Harrods owner Mohammed Al Fayed, whose son Dodi also died in the car crash said he was "sad and angry" over the photo.

"This heartless pursuit of money brings shame on those responsible for producing such a vile production," he said.

"It makes me sad and angry that a magazine would reproduce an image of the princess as she clung desperately to life."

A photo of the princess being given oxygen at the crash scene appeared in the weekly Chi magazine.

Diana and her lover Dodi Fayed died in the crash in Paris in 1997, along with their chauffeur, Henri Paul.

Mr Al Fayed said the editor of the Milan-based magazine, and the author of a new book about the crash, had "no thought" for Diana's family, particularly her sons.

But Britain's domestic Press Association news agency quoted Chi editor Umberto Brindani as saying the photo - headlined "World Exclusive: The Last Photo" - was "touching" and "tender", not offensive.

"She is not dead in the picture but looks as if she is a sleeping princess," he was quoted as saying.

"I published the picture for a very simple reason - it has never been seen before. In my opinion it is not a picture which is offensive to the memory of Princess Diana.

"As a thorough and informative news magazine we have merely reported the publication of a book in France regarding Princess Diana's death."

The photo is taken from a book by crime writer Jean-Michel Caradec'h called Lady Diana: The Criminal Investigation.

It is said to also include photos of Diana taken shortly after the car crashed at high speed in a road tunnel as well as autopsy diagrams detailing the extent of her injuries.

Reaction to the publication in Britain - where there was an unprecedented public outpouring of grief after the princess' death - was one of outrage, with tabloid newspapers leading the charge.

Mass circulation tabloid The Sun carried a front-page headline "Shame on You", claiming there was "worldwide fury" at the publication and that Diana's sons William and Harry were "sickened and appalled".

The Daily Express, which has run regular prominent stories on the crash investigation, claimed London-based distributor IPN was considering whether it was acceptable to import copies of Chi into Britain.

That one is a fake and was being circulated in 1997.

French authorities said today that a photo circulating on the Web, allegedly of Princess Diana in the car wreck that killed her, is a fake.

A spokesman for Paris criminal police told Reuters today: "This is not a picture of Princess Diana's accident. It's a fake." Rescuers in the picture were not wearing standard French emergency services gear, he added. Also, a three-digit emergency phone number in the background--999--was not a French number and appeared to be British.

The 999 number does give it away. It's as if there was a placard in the NY Subway saying call "999" for an emergency. Sorry, we use "911" here and France uses "112" for emergency calls.

You only have to worry about that if you live your life in a immoral way. Maybe saying she got what she deserved was bit extreme. I guess what I meant was I didn't feel much pity for her.

She got what she deserved, sleeping with that Arab . . .

What do people who sleep with Chinese, Russian, or Cuban people deserve? Maybe they should die in a fiery plane crash???

> She got what she deserved, sleeping with that Arab,

WOW.

Ummm... "I bet a 12-step program would show you how being bitter and hard-headed has caused you alot of grief in your life."

"I suspect there was someone in your life who chose the program over your strange version of compassion. I'm sorry for your pain."

"Having someone like you in their life will only make it worse."

Suddenly, you're starting to come into sharp relief. Just all P.O.ed about everything, aincha. Now, that's real classy, right?

I didn't "follow you around." I wandered into this topic and saw... your interesting idea of compassion.

I'm upfront that I don't like many Arabs. I'm Jewish and they, as a culture, want me dead. What I really meant, however, was that this particular Arab she slept with was the arch-enemy of her in-laws. She did it on purpose to hurt them. That's what I meant.

"...don't follow me around..."

I was not aware that we have devolved into internet stalking as a no-no. I have no dog in this fight; however, It just made me recall Truman's quote about the heat and the kitchen.

It was not "internet stalking." It was a discussion from *yesterday* between two people who randomly bumped into each other *today.* FYI.

Seems to me, if a person goes on about compassion on Thursday, and then suggests that sleeping with someone from the wrogn race/religion on Friday merits death... the irony is worth mentioning.

I don't know if you are a christian or a god loving person but this statement you made has got to be one of the ugliest things I have read.

Not good my friend...

... was actually quoted from the now-removed post #7. Poor attribution can be an issue, people should do better. Leads to confusion rather annoyingly commonly.

I am a christian and it might have been a bit over the top statement. I do seriously have a problem with someone who cheats on her husband and then after the divorce she went on all these trips with different guys. I mean I would have preferred her to watch over her children instead of running off on all the latest "activist" runs. I mean is raising her children more important than running around the world digging up mines. Honestly I don't know how many she personally dug up, but I can't imagine the time lost with her children was more benificial. Of course, it does not really matter what I think because she did what she felt was important. I am sorry that you had to read the ugliest statement (hopefully only on FR. lol) from me. thank you for pointing that out and when I reread it, I did think twice about what I wrote.
