I was reviewing my libray and was wondering what the best, all time favorite, must have books I should get to complete my Conservative Collection. Here's what I've got: God & Man at Yale, All PJ O'Rourke Books (He converted me in 1996), Witness, First Things by Hadley Arkes (Must read for Pro-lifers!)
Any thoughts, Freepers?

Witness is one of the great books of the 20th century. It is a tragedy that so few read it anymore. I rank it as one of the finest books I have ever read, up there with C.S. Lewis's The Great Divorce and Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings.

I doubt this would make a Top 10 list but I'm currently reading Tom Wolfe's "A Man in Full." Actually I'm re-reading it as I first read it when it came out about 10 years ago.
In general, I find Tom Wolfe's books to be good conservative reading. I'm not entirely sure what Wolfe's political leanings are but there is no way a true liberal could be writing these books.

Did You Ever See a Dream Walking, a collection of conservative essays edited by Buckley in the late 60's. Parts are tough going, but it's well worth the effort.

After the Fountainhead I don't know if I can do another Rand book.
Is it that good?

I would add "Basic Economics: A Citizens Guide to the Economy" by Thomas Sowell. It's an engaging explanaintion of the economy from a conservative point of view.
I would also add Hayek and Friedman's "The Road to Serfdom" to really understand what we have to lose.

Agreed. One of the very best books I've ever read.

You are off to a good start. Others might be "Free To Choose" by Milton Friedman and "Up From Liberalism" by WFB in his prime.

As far as literature goes, its even worse. Its probably worth the effort though you'll find yourself skipping througn pages of inane polemics.

plus Free to Choose, Milton Friedman
Gotta have those two
Here's an obscure suggestion The History of Rome by Livy
crucial to understanding the republic
To: FastCoyote
Friedman's Capitalism and Freedom is also worthy of note.
