I'll sign on with Seabiscuit and add Tin Cup.

I'm a bit of a fan of Costner's sports movies, I guess, but will be the first to admit that in all of them the parts are usually better than the whole. Bull Durham and For Love of the Game were pretty good so long as they were on the game and not off the field. Tin Cup away from the golf course was saved by the supporting cast Cheech Marin and Don Johnson were both great, and that group of friends were outstanding.

"agree with kevkrom that Hoosiers is probably the best Sports movie. It was much deeper than Glory Road, which I just saw last week."

I thought Hoosiers was pure fiction?

Between Hoosiers and Breaking Away, southern Indiana has two that are Top 5.

Shaolin Soccer

That's a good "soccer" call.

I hope you've also seen Mike Basett England Manager.

Interesting, looking at the list so far, that almost all, if not all, of the ones listed are from the last 30 years or so. Are there any old-time sports movies that can stand up to this level?

I will say Field Of Dreams & Miracles & Hoosiers since I have the DVD's. With a honorable mentions to The Winning Team starring Ronald Reagan and Doris Day. LOL!

With only 3 to list there should probably be a mix of serious and comedy.

1) Hoosiers - the ending is telegraphed from the first frame especially if you're familiar with the original Milan HS team that inspired it. You still find yourself cheering every game, even when viewing for the 100th time. Avoids being maudlin for the most part, unlike many of its ripoffs. The actor who played Jimmy Chitwood is a golf club pro now.

2) Slap Shot - more quotable than Caddyshack and funnier too. May have done almost as much as Lake Placid to get American kids into hockey (at least as fans).

3) Rudy - No, wait, scratch that. It was about Notre Dame. Yawn. Let's try again. *Ducks flames from Irish fans*

3 (revised)) Rocky edges Bull Durham for the 3rd spot. There's already one comedy in the list and the original Rocky was nothing like the cartoonish self-aware sequels. It was supposed to be less about boxing and more about people and it succeeded. "I wanna kill the freakin' moron who broke the mirror!"

"Mike Basett England Manager"

Is that a film? I guess I'm not familiar with it. Can you tell me more?

It might be (I think it is based on true events, when a small school won the Indiana state championship back when all schools played for one title).

Even so, unless the question is Top 3 non-fiction sports movies.

My Top 3 would be:
Hoosiers
Breaking Away
The Natural (Gives me chills as the sparks fall in the penultimate scene)

I forget which one it was, but one of those was the head coach of Memphis' semi-pro hockey team. Honestly!!!!!

Love Ricky Tomlinson and the Royles, but I forgot to buy a copy of 'Mike Bassett' last time I was in London. Will see if Netflix has it.
