Interesting, looking at the list so far, that almost all, if not all, of the ones listed are from the last 30 years or so. Are there any old-time sports movies that can stand up to this level?
1937's Playing the Ponies is one of the most important films ever made about horse racing---the "sport of kings."

No it was based on the 1954 Milan High School team. When Hoosiers first came out, I remeber the embarassment of one reviewer who got blasted after saying he didn't like it because something like this could never happen in real life, not knowing it was loosely based on a true story.

I forget which one it was, but one of those was the head coach of Memphis' semi-pro hockey team. Honestly!!!!! I believe it---I think a bunch of guys in that movie were real-time minor-leaguers.

sorry wrong spelling.. Mike Bassett England manager.
It's a spoof of a fictitious England Manager during the World Cup.
You really need to know your English "Soccer" to thoroughly enjoy it though.

That's not one of Michael Palin's "Ripping Yarns," is it? Now that you mention it, I've seen one of those where Palin is either a soccer fan or a coach whose team keeps losing game after game...

I'd like to add Slapshot, Friday Night Lights and Cinderella Man. Friday Night Lights is a hell of a movie. My favorite line is when Winchell goes to the huddle near the end of Permian/Carter game and says, "OK boys, lets shock these punks."
I've watched the movie several times hoping that Winchell gets in on the final play this time.

Gladiator.
Don't tell me it's not a sports movie. The stakes were just a little higher back then!

I believe it---I think a bunch of guys in that movie were real-time minor-leaguers. That was the Johnstown (PA) Chiefs masquerading as the Charlestown Chiefs. In the paraded scene you can see the Johnstown high school marching band with the big "J" on their uniforms.
The Chiefs still play, in the ECHL.

Gladiator. Don't tell me it's not a sports movie. The stakes were just a little higher back then! Oh, come now... if we're going there, we might as well include The Princess Bride for fencing, swimming, and wrestling.

Knute Rockne, All American
The last thing George said to me, 'Rock,' he said, 'sometime when the team is up against it and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to go out there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper.'
