Soldiers always complain.

It is not to my credit that I didn't consider that. It only proves how far away my little ideals are from battleground realities where these men and women are in harm's way -- real, life-or-death situations -- making it possible for people like me to sit around and spin idealistic dictums about how and what they should or shouldn't complain about.

That's what NCO's are for - to recognize when the complaining is normal, and where it is a symptom of a real problem.

Our platoon Sergeant in the 82nd used to scream out, "Attitude Check!"

To which, the platoon would respond, "F%CK IT!"

Ever see the Bill Mauldin "Willie and Joe" cartoons that came out during WWII and Korea? Absolutely priceless. They were full of cartoons of bitchin' Joes. But the bitches were always legitimate and every one of us "Joe's" could identify with every single one. Bill died back in January 2003 at 81. God love him, may he forever rest in peace. Two of my favorites:
