Thanks for the ping. I've downloaded the Beta, but I usually wait for the RC to install the new version.

Firefox keeps losing my bookmarks! I want an alternative because the third time is the last straw. It's fine for surfing but I make tons of bookmarks, and it loses them all!

If you're using FF 1.5 or later, the program automatically saves backups of your bookmarks file in the 'bookmarkbackups' folder in your profile directory. Lost bookmarks - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

I also highly recommend using MozBackup - Backup tool for Firefox and Thunderbird to make periodic backups of your profile directory. I do this at least once a week.

I have just one question: Where in the world is the backup saved?

Forget about my where-is-it-backed-up question. I downloaded the latest version. It allowed me to choose the location. The older version I had didn't.

With Mozbackup, you can save the file to anywhere you want... it prompts you for a location.

The automatic bookmark backup is in the Profile folder.

Unfortunately, the application hasn't been ported to Linux.

In Linux, your Mozilla and Thunderbird profiles are stored in two folders in your home directory: ".mozilla" and ".thunderbird". You can make copies of those two folders. Depending on your choice of GUI and file explorer (Nautilus, etc.), you might have to set an option switch to see the folders that start with a "dot", since that normally means "hidden".

Your bookmarks file is typically:

.mozilla/default/{some_godawful_string}/bookmarks.html

Before doing a complete copy of the profile folders, I recommend:

If you're feeling geeky, you can use this command in an xterm to make a single compressed archive:

tar -czf {archive_name}.tgz ~/.mozilla ~/.thunderbird
Yes, I that tar is gibberish to a lot of folks. My daughter (13) likes using it because it is like a secret language. For everybody else, I look forward to MozBackup getting ported to Linux.

Wouldn't it be much easier to simply copy the Profile Folder and store it in an appropriate place in the /home/* directory?

Frankly, Mozilla was quite poor at telling Linux Users where the Profile Folder is located. Had to destroy a corrupt one to get FF 1.5.0.6 to install. (fortunately i took a copy of my bookmarks across from my Window$ partition and hand replaced them, and i always download copies of extensions and themes.

If you have a file location for where Firefox puts the Profile folder in Linux, shoot it back to me will ya?
