Have had more than one Mason assert to me the routine-ness of Masonic judges letting Masonic defendents off entirely or easy.

If you were an upper middle class professional guy a half a century ago, chances are you joined a club or two. Maybe the country club. The Masons were another possibility, especially if you were Protestant. It was a way to hang out with other upper middle class Protestant professionals.

And if you were an upper middle class Protestant professional guy a half century ago, you probably had certain views about politics and society, probably more conservative about some things, yet strangely liberal about other things, at least by our standards today.

It's different social milieus that account for those views, not the Masons as a movement.
