Vanity: Need Computer Help

Need assistance from any techno-geeks out there, please.

OK - my PC (emachines T1840, Celeron 1.8Ghz) died. I went to turn it on a week ago and nothing happened. The power supply fan was not working.

I would like to get this running, and also retrieve our family photos on the hard drive.

So I replaced the power supply - didn't work.

Then I replaced the motherboard - didn't work.

Next I replaced the processor - didn't work.

Last I replaced the RAM - didn't work.

At this point, all I get is a fast ticking sound in time with the hard-drive LED blinking in the front - about 2x per second. That's all. No beeps. No acknowledgement on the screen of any activity.

Help? Any ideas?

Vasoline?

Guess I wasted the money on 'Artic Silver' then (not).

That has got to stink.

I think they mean they are a operating system specialist, not a hardware or DVD software specialist.

won't bother you again.

Please ping me if you have any question about Unix. I will be at your service.

You know what....Youre' right...Nero did come with it but I immediately packed it away since I have it already somewhere and because it took over my computer when I installed it before.....it's like Realplayer....thinks it has to be in control of everything :)
Thanks....I will try that!

Yep, big fines in selling them for sure, but at around $20 a DVD it is worthwhile to back up your library before you let kids play and ruin them on and outside of DVD players.

Nero's not quite as bad a real player.

All you need to do to fix things after the install is re-install media player classic (or the modern media player if you prefer). It does'nt keep trying to change things back every time it runs.

The ones I mentioned are from a company called Slysoft.

They work, and after you buy them they give (they say) a lifetime of updates.

CyberLink PowerDVD is better than WinDVD and can be had for $50. There's a free trial so you can check it out.

Help? Any ideas?

If someone hasn't suggested this yet, dump the eMachine and get a refurbed Dell GX270 or so and put your HDD in the Dell as a slave unit to get your data.

I just replaced an eMachine for a friend by doing this. Voltage spike fried the PS and MB.
I got her a 2 year old Dell GX270 on eBay for $345. P4/2.5Ghz with 512Mb RAM and XP Pro. Popped in the old drive, moved the data and started re-installing everything else.
