Jay Severin returns home (to Boston and afternoons)

Come Monday, October 9th, do not adjust your dial if you hear a familiar voice on the same station in the old timeslot.

From Greater Media's announcement tonight :

Greater Media, Inc. announces veteran on-air personality Jay Severin will be returning to afternoon drive on Boston's 96.9 FM Talk / WTKK on October 9th, 2006.

Under the new deal with WTKK, Severin's show will air in its original 3-7pm time slot, live and local and exclusive to Boston. In addition, the talk show personality has announced that he will be relocating to the Boston area.

Severin began his prime-time radio career on WTKK in September of 1999 and quickly gained a loyal following in the Boston market. Within five years, Severin quadrupled his ratings among Adults 25-54, posting a 6.7 share and #2 ranking in his time slot by Winter 2004, according to quarterly ratings reports released by Arbitron, Inc. He enjoyed similar success with both male and female audiences in the 25-54 age demographic.

Since January of 2006, Severin's show has been airing on WTKK from 7-10pm as part of a national syndication agreement with Westwood One and CBS Radio.

"For many years I have learned and loved Boston and all of New England. Now I get to live it, too! The only thing better than spending time with the country's "best and brightest" audience is actually moving into the neighborhood," said Severin.

"I am greatly excited about becoming a "legal alien" of Red Sox Nation and even more psyched to focus all of my energy on creating the most entertaining afternoon radio show anywhere and being a key player in this station's commitment to building and maintaining the most powerful talk radio station in America."

He added, "I believe the Standells said it best: 'I love that dirty water (of course I'll be drinking only imported bottled water)...Oh, Boston you're my home’."

"Jay Severin is one of the premier talk personalities in American Radio today," said Greater Media President & CEO Peter Smyth. "I welcome Jay home and look forward to working with him as 96.9 FM Talk / WTKK sets the pace for talk radio in Boston."

"This is a great day for 96.9 FM Talk/WTKK and for Jay, “said Greater Media Boston Market Manager Phil Redo. "We're looking forward to him producing the most exciting locally-based talk radio show ever. We are also thrilled he has decided to leave New York and make his full-time home here. Jay is going to be a major part of the WTKK family for a long time.”

"The prodigal son has returned home to Boston and our 96.9 FM TALK family - not that he ever really left," said Program Director Paula O'Connor. "It is great to have Jay back on the team of stellar FM TALK talent."

Nationally-recognized radio host and author Michael Graham, who took over the afternoon drive slot on WTKK in November of 2005, will remain with the station in a time slot still to be determined.

"Michael is terrific and we are very pleased with the initial success of his show on WTKK," said Redo. "We look forward to working with him to continue building on that success in the new time slot."

According to industry sources, Graham who has a contract with WTKK, will remain with the station and his new timeslot will be announced soon. One option for Graham may be a move to to nights(7pm-10pm or 7pm-11pm) to counter rival WRKO-AM 680 which will be going to sports-heavy night schedule as the Celtics return in October and then Red Sox games arrive in April.

I like Jay but it's hard to pull me away from Howie.

Sounds like a demotion for Jay.

Sounds like the national show didn't work out. As I and other pointed out on radio boards, he only got a few stations, and that time slot was tough to crack: many stations run Savage or tape-delayed Hannity, and some pre-empted him with sports.
I believe his affiliate in Philly, WPHT "The Big Talker",
had the Phillies on just about every night (they had the
team in '05 and probably this past year, too...)

Would rather hear Howie than Jay. Jay sometimes good in small doses, maybe when the station I'm listening to is in a commercial break...I wonder how he will do in that aft.
time slot against Howie. Maybe not bad: allegedly he beat Howie a few years ago, in some ratings periods. Am guessing Graham will wind up with 7 pm but who knows. Not quite into him either!

And I still don't know if they're serious about him moving into Boston, unless they count Sag Harbor, L.I., as
Boston...(his home)

7 year deal from Greater Media for Severin? All that money they were gonna spend on the Red Sox (backed out of poss.
deal to put them on 'BOS) had to go somewhere.

>> Less than a year after signing a syndication deal that put him on the air from 7-10 p.m. in some 50 markets nationally

The article does say Graham gets bumped to nights...that Jay will be moving to the North Shore...
that $500,000 is what GM paid to CBS/W1 for Severino to get out of his deal early.

http://www.wtkk.com has a countdown timer to Severin's "return" and confirms it'll be Graham doing 7-10

It's 7:30 right now and WTKK is running Laura Ingraham.

Jay has been off a lot lately. Maybe they've canned the national show already?

Here's the link to the other stations that stream his show:

Hmmm, WPRO is running the show tonight, but I'm guessing it's another repeat

(hint: he's talking about how Patches Kennedy was sentenced today, LOL!)

yeah WTKK ran Laura at 7 pm, then reruns of Barnicle and
then Eagan and Braude. I think as far as WTKK is concerned his show is over ("resting up" for new incarnation) while his affiliates doing best ofs with no on-air announcement that the show will soon be totally gone etc
