Howie Carr thread. btw on Thu., some of Howie's stations like WRKO will have to cut out at 5:30 pm since Thu. night Sox game has been moved up to 6 pm (pre-game show at 5:30...WCRN doesn't carry pre-game though). The Sox (happy 500th HR, Manny!) are moving their game up an hour so it'll be over before Celtics game starts at 9.

Howie Carr thread; Howie is on vacation all week I believe (not sure who's filling in) but if there are columns (as there was in today's Herald) I'll post 'em. Talk about the show, etc.
-
Howie made his grand return to radio on Nov. 18. In this weekly thread we follow his show plus I'll post interesting columns by him, etc. There are usually daily pings Mon.-Fri. and Sun with his column.

Howie made his grand return to the airwaves on Friday. From now on, the live ping will be done week to week. Those on the ping list will be pinged for (most) columns, as well as Monday through Friday for his shows, though perhaps not on holidays and/or times when he'll be off (this week for example, he won't be on Thanksgiving or the following day)

Howie still in limbo radio wise though he talked about some of his fave food on Phantom Gourmet this weekend. His column from today's Herald was part of last week's running thread.

Howie Carr is asking a single appeals court justice to let a full panel hear his appeal of a judge’s decision that has barred him from jumping to WTKK (96.9) - and to allow him to work at the FM station while the case winds its way through court, which could take over a year. Carr is appealing a decision by Suffolk Superior Court Judge Allan van Gestel, who said the so-called right to match provision in Carr’s WRKO (680 AM) contract is valid and that Carr remains under contract with WRKO. The provision allowed WRKO to match a competing...

Off the air for nearly a month, Boston talkmeister Howie Carr is set to ask a judge today to reconsider an earlier decision, and clear the way for him to become the new morning drive host at WTKK (96.9 FM). Carr, a Boston Herald columnist, has been embroiled in a legal battle with WRKO (680 AM) since he announced in July that he struck a deal - worth up to $7 million - with the rival station. WRKO executives matched WTKK’s offer, and say that because they did so, the popular radio host is obliged to work for them until...

Howie Carr live thread for the week of Oct 14. Including his Sun 10/14 Herald column. The show is still up in the air; meeting is supposedly being held tomorrow. Greater Media wants Howie to do mornings for them but Entercom still feels he is their property, etc. Todd Feinburg has been filling in in the meantime. If I hear anything I'll pass it along.

Boston Radio Watch http://www.bostonradiowatch.com revealed that Howie is working on a new website, even though there still isn't a resolution to his radio situation http://www.howiecarr969.com The top of the page shows the "old" WTKK logo and the current WTKK lineup (without Howie) followed by "Everyone's Favorite Howie Carr"--sans Sandy. Well, she is still employed by Entercom. (Entercom feels that also applies to Howie). The rest of the page is his Boston gangster stuff but that's a big problem: the page takes awhile to fully load/scroll, even on broadband. Ever consider doing multiple pages, Howie, with links to them? One loooooooong...

Not the Howie Carr Show live thread for the week of Oct 1. This was supposed to originally be the day Howie was to debut on WTKK. As the Sept 19 deadline got closer there was speculation he'd debut on 96.9 on Sept 20 but a judge's ruling has delayed it. A judge ruled that while a non-compete clause was not valid, a "right to match" was. Now while Entercom claims they have the rights to Howie for the next 5 years, Howie was been sitting it out, refusing to report for work. Listeners have been getting Todd Feinburg. It's...

(Scott Fybush): *A MASSACHUSETTS judge barred WRKO (680 Boston) Howie Carr from jumping ship to rival talker WTKK (96.9 Boston) last week, but the decision didn't make the host's future much clearer. Suffolk Superior Court Judge Allan van Gessel ruled Wednesday, just hours before Carr was to have started his WTKK morning shift, that while WRKO owner Entercom couldn't enforce the non-compete clause in Carr's contract, it could enforce a clause that allowed WRKO to match any competing offer for Carr's services. What does "match" mean? There's the seven-million-dollar question as the legal battle keeps plodding along: would merely matching...

The Howie Carr situation isn't settled and may not be for awhile. As those on the ping list know, the judge issued a mixed ruling--the non-compete clause was not valid under MA law but the "right to match" was. Entercom feels that Howie's contract is continuing for the next 5 years with them, but Howie doesn't want to work there anymore. So Howie is in limbo--he can't join WTKK until either Entercom gives his release (maybe a financial deal could be worked out?) or an appeal overturns the ruling, or who KNOWS what. Howie will have to live off his...

Decision day...as I pointed out in another thread, a decision may be issued today as to whether or not Howie can jump to WTKK-FM tomorrow--or at all. Today is the last day for Howie at WRKO under his contract but it's possible he may stay if a judge issues a restraining order to Entercom. I'm not even sure if Howie will be on today...busy at the courthouse? Or benched by Entercom? It's even possible someone else may start the show and Howie would show up later. We should get word later. If Howie is able to jump, then very late...

WRKO radio host Howie Carr’s future on the airwaves will be determined today by a Suffolk Superior Court judge who will decide whether the popular talk host can jump to rival WTKK without any future legal woes. At the center of the legal battle are the “right-to-match” and non-compete provisions in Carr’s contract with WRKO (680 AM), which Carr’s lawyer says are illegal and unenforceable under Massachusetts law. At a court hearing yesterday, Carr’s attorney, Bret Cohen, argued that a state statute prohibits the enforceability of noncompete agreements and other post-employment restrictions against people in the broadcast industry. But Shepard...

Howie Carr Show live thread. More below about the mystery of exactly where Howie will be come Thursday.

Yes, I'm putting up the ping list 6 hours before the start of Howie's show but I wanted to get things rolling. It will be an interesting week as far as Howie is concerned. He'll start it on WRKO but could end it on WTKK--or perhaps off the air while things settle down. At least one of his affiliates (Worcester's WCRN 830) has dropped him, not wanting to wait for it all to get settled. As far as some people like Howie are concerned, he will end his show Wed. on WRKO when his contract expires and start on WTKK...

With just days left on his WRKO radio talk show contract, Howie Carr is poised to get behind the morning-drive microphone on rival WTKK Thursday as his current station mounts a last-ditch legal effort to block the move. “WRKO has said they plan to file papers to enjoin Howie from moving to WTKK,” said Carr’s lawyer, Bret Cohen of Mintz Levin. Cohen said Carr will fight any injuction effort. A WRKO/Entercom spokesman declined comment. WTKK officials did not return calls. Carr’s contract with WRKO (680 AM) expires Wednesday and he’s scheduled to take over the morning-drive spot on WTKK (96.9...
-
Entercom and Greater Media have been mum about Howie Carr leaving (his contract is expected to expire on Sept 19) to go to WTKK. But there is a clue that is could well be happening. Howie's Worcester affiliate, WCRN, now has this on their webpage: "Starting Monday, Join Peter Blute for 4 hours of Live and Local Talk in the morning! The Peter Blute Show from 6-10AM, and Hank Stolz moves to the afternoons 2-6PM. THE SWITCH IS ON!" So Howie has been replaced, on a station that has been quite loyal to him. It looks like the move to...

Yes, starting a bit early; note Howie is prob. not on air today (not sure who's filling in). He's said the other day he'd be off "Tue." for "jury duty". In his last hour yesterday he said again he'd be off (today) but "it's not for jury duty, it's for something else". I wonder if "jury duty" was a casual way of referring to meeting up with lawyers trying to get all this settled?

When I first met Howie Carr he was a shy newspaper columnist from Boston. How times have changed. Now Carr is the franchise player for team WRKO, a Boston talk radio station owned by Entercom Communications. He has also written a New York Times best seller, The Brothers Bulger. As host of WRKO's afternoon talk program from 3:00 to 7:00 Monday through Friday Carr is the station's biggest ratings and money draw. This is something usually achieved by the morning drive host. For years WRKO has not been able to muster the talent necessary either to top Howie's afternoon success...

Howie must REALLY be back: the WRKO site says there will be a death pool. What will they let him say about his situation? THURSDAY, JULY 12 1st Hour Lady Bird Johnson, the widow of Lyndon B. Johnson, whose tumultuous presidency often overshadowed her considerable achievements as an activist first lady, environmentalist and founder of a multimillion-dollar media business, died Wednesday at her home in Austin, Texas. She was 94. She was also in the Death Pool which means for one hour it is open again! Call in with your prediction of which celebrity will next shuffle off this mortal...

Howie Carr’s jump from WRKO-AM (680) to WTKK-FM (96.9) isn’t a done deal just yet. Carr’s new morning drive-time show is supposed to begin in October. But after the Herald reported this past Monday that Carr was poised to bolt WRKO, station spokesman George Regan released a statement hinting that WRKO might take legal steps aimed at keeping Carr from leaving — or, barring that, at making his exit as unpleasant as possible. “He is a tremendous asset to WRKO and Entercom [WRKO’s parent company] has every intention of retaining his services for many years to come,” said Regan. “Any...

WRKO appears set to launch an all-out legal battle to stop Howie Carr’s defection to its FM rival, but lawyers for the star talk show host say station executives bungled a key chance to keep him. Carr’s contract, which is up in September, had a renewal option that gave Entercom the right to renew his contract for one more year by March 19, according to Carr’s attorney, Bret Cohen of Mintz Levin. Cohen said Carr agreed to extend the deadline three times but Entercom failed to exercise its option to renew his contract. Carr, a Herald columnist who has hosted...

Last Friday's announcement that controversial former Don Imus Show producer/sidekick Bernard McGuirk would co-host Tom Finneran's morning talk show "Finneran's Forum" on WRKO-AM 680 for three days this week created a stir and a good amount of local and national media publicity. Late this afernoon, bowing to pressure from Boston's African American community leaders, WRKO's management decided to scrub the McGuirk's Wednesday thru Friday guest co-hosting appearance on the station. WRKO's decision comes a day before Sadiki Kambon-led The Black Community Information Center Inc. planned to protest outside the radio station's studios in Brighton for considering McGuirk as a possible...

Some WRKO advertisers were jolted yesterday upon hearing news that the Boston radio station is giving Bernard McGuirk, the controversial sidekick of disgraced talk-jock Don Imus, an on-air tryout next week on Tom Finneran’s faltering morning drive show. “I’m not in agreement with bringing him in,” said Richard Charpentier, owner of South Shore Environmental Services, an ’RKO advertiser. McGuirk, the longtime producer of Imus’ nationally syndicated talk show, was canned a week after Imus because of their now infamous “nappy-headed hos” banter about members of the Rutgers female basketball team. McGuirk got the ball rolling by referring to the players...
