AUBURN - On cool Tuesday morning, Auburn's football team put the finishing touches on its game plan for Thursday night's game at South Carolina.
The No. 2 Tigers (4-0, 2-0) play the Gamecocks (3-1, 1-1) at 6:45 at Williams-Brice Stadium. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
"It's been a hectic week, a short week," Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said. "These guys have done a lot of work and the coaches have done a lot of preparation. We've gotten a lot done."
Tuberville said his team should go into the game healthy. Tailback Kenny Irons, linebacker Karibi Dede and cornerback Jonathan Wilhite all sat out last Saturday's 38-7 victory over Buffalo.
"Everybody looks like they are pretty much close to 100 percent," Tuberville said.
Redshirt freshman defensive end Antonio Coleman left practice Monday with a strained elbow but practiced Tuesday morning.
OL progressing: Offensive line coach Hugh Nall says his unit is making progress, though he admits the pace can be frustrating.
"There are still some things I'm not happy with," Nall said. "In the LSU game, we turned some people loose, which is uncalled for. We turned people loose in short-yardage (against Buffalo). We had the right check. We just didn't get it executed.
"These guys have to keep seeing different looks. Hopefully, by November, we'll be a good offensive line. We still have a ways to go."
Making changes: South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier didn't stand pat after the Gamecocks were shut out 18-0 by Georgia on Sept. 9. He made numerous lineup changes, including replacing Blake Mitchell, the starting quarterback last season and in the opener this season, with Syvelle Newton. One of Spurrier's first moves before last season, his first at South Carolina, was to shift Newton from quarterback to wide receiver.
"He's not one that will not take a chance, and he's not one that will not make changes," Tuberville said.
Studying trip: Auburn's first Thursday night game since the season opener against Wyoming in 2000 required adjustments on and off the field.
Along with their football equipment, Auburn players will take books to South Carolina.
"We've got a lot of tests this week," Tuberville said. "On our itinerary, we've got a study hall for about 20 guys that have a big test Friday. We're taking two academic people with us to make sure they study for that test."
Auburn players will attend classes this morning before leaving for Columbia this afternoon, Tuberville said.
BTW, this game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN tomorrow.

Auburn game plan for SC: show up. ;)
Done...welcome to the list. I hope it is a fun game tomorrow. The Tigers should be back in full strength.
Boy, wouldn't I love to see that smirk wiped off Spurrier's face?

Growing up, I remember how my dad could not stand Spurrier....just drove him crazy watching him!
Well, hey, at least I know what my husband will be doing Thursday night!
I hope the Gamecocks beat them 50 to nothing; but then I'm an LSU fan who is still pissed!
It's the only USC that they can beat.
So am I....just not at Auburn (for once!). I'm still ticked at the refs, and the SEC for refusing do admit the mistakes.
The game's over, we lost, but sheesh!
Hey Mike,
Have you heard this radio host's meltdown over the MSU/Notre Dame game? (see link - it's at the bottom of the article w/ the picture of Teddy Ruxpin and HR Pufnstuf)

Beat Gamecocks!
There are 2 factors that Auburn needs to guard against biting them this week -- one it is a short week, and two they better not get caught not taking the Gamecocks seriouly.
South Carolina, while honestly not a very good team, benefits from the perception that they are a bad team. All anyone sees is that they were Manhandled by Georgia and struggled against Wofford of all teams. BUt they do have a very good defense, and this game may be much closer than anyone thinks.
Still, Auburn just has too much talent compared to S.Car. --- Final Score Auburn 17 S. Carolina 6.
They're great but they're going to get screwed out of a National Championship...AGAIN.
