Wow I'm still using 4! I've been fearful of upgrading to 5 not wanting to break very important apps. Now 6 is out lol.

Thanks.

Bump for later torrents.

I think I'll load it in VMWare first. :-)

Okay, so what's new with Fedora 6?

Have you tried it?  Can you recommend it ... disavow it?  Is there a reason to upgrade for those that have Fed 5?  You usually evaluate these things pretty well, what's your opinion on this?

Me and some buddies here are putting together a workstation and need the open source software that does the kind of stuff MS Office does (--word processor, spreadsheet, html editor, and presentations).  One additional problem is that we want it all in Spanish, but that part might just be easier if I instead just teach the guy English.

At any rate, can anybody here steer me to a thread with comments and download/torrent links?

Almost any Linux distribution will have the features that you are seeking. Open Office comes with almost all distributions and can be installed on any of them. It does just about everything MS Office does and you can open MS documents and save them as MS documents. Regarding Spanish language, I beleive, and someone may correct me, that most of the major distributions offer a choice of several languages.

For a good rundown of most distributions available go to DistroWatch.

You may want to try out some Live CD/DVDs to help narrow down your choices. DistroWatch also posts links to reviews of the distributions as well. They also have links to where you can download the disks.

The ability of the distribution to recognize and use your hardware may be a big factor in your decision. I have a preference for SUSE and Mepis (that's just me) but am going to install Mandriva 2007 on my new laptop primarily because it recognizes all of my hardware which no other distribution was able to (not a Linux friendly laptop but it was cheap).

One nice thing about Linux is all the choices available and once you install one you can customize it to your liking.

OK, I downloaded, burned the DVD, and installed FC6 on my laptop that runs Fedora Core 5 perfectly.

I didn't get very far. For some reason (I haven't done a lot of research into this yet), kernel 2.6.18 (FC6 kernel) doesn't work on my system. The standard kernel has some kind of conflict with my onboard Intel '97 audio, so I don't get any sound, while the smp version of the kernel doesn't start up X at all.

For a more thorough look at FC6, check out this Linux Format article.

I know this thread is old but are you using Fedora on a daily basis? How is it working out?

I picked up a retired PC from work and am going to set it up as a common storage area for the home network, plus an internet station for guests who come around and put trash on my wife's laptop (I won't let anybody use mine).

I installed the old Mandrake 8.0 I had laying around from years back when I was experimenting with it (never did get it stable on the old K6-2 I threw together for it but it seems to be okay on the Dell P3 I scored from work), but it does not have support for the Wi-Fi card I want to use (or any Wi-Fi card for that matter).

So I thought why not modernize and I am downloading the torrent now (that is another thing I had never tried). It looks like it will be about a ten hour download on my DSL connection.

Can you put me on the open source ping list?

It was my primary desktop at work with my previous employer, not a all a bad system but when I ran dual head dvi it would sometimes crash x.

We'll see how it goes here. I started installing it Monday night and it was giving me some trouble, hanging about 1/3 of the way through installing the packages. Tonight after rearranging the mismatched RAM it seems to be (knock on wood) working. It is humming along and I think close to asking for the third disc. We'll see.

I have a Blitzz PCI 802.11b card that I'm told this version supports. I hope I can get it at least connected to the network tonight. It is going to live farther from the router than I want to cable.

Ah - just asked for disc 3, wish me luck!
