(Vanity) How Are Things At Your Polling Place?

Posted on 11/07/2006 9:55:15 AM PST by TBP

What are the conditions at your polling place? How is turnout? The weather? The voting equipment? Was checking in easy? Were there people outside electioneering? if so, who was there, Republicans or Democrats or others?

At my polling place, thigns were slow when my wife and I went to vote about 8-ish. One of the few guys passing out literature (for the newly-Republican State Senator inmy district) was saying that the turnout had been very low. (I'm going to go over there later and see how it's going.) The only people electioneering were two guys handing out literature for the Republican and Democrat candidates for the State Senate in my district and one guy working for a candidate for county office in my district. Nobody from either side of the gubernatorial or Senate races.

The weather is good. It's in the 50s and clear. No precip expected.

We have new Diebold touch-screen machines this year. They're easy to use. But where is the paper trail? How do you recount if you need to? They felt the need to put up a big sign announcing that the electronic voting is secure and it's illegal to tamper with it. We have electronic check-in too. I'm not sure I entirely trust it; it's a blue state, after all.

I grew up on lever machines and know how they can be compromised, but I miss them. At least I had a curtain so nobody could walk by and look at how I am voting.

Let's track this all day and see how it's trending.

I voted at 8am this morning. Maybe 15-20 people in line.
Voted on the new electronic machine, double-checked my choices on the screen but overlooked checking the paper copy. Got in my car, turned on XM listening to Glenn Beck and first thing I heard was a caller saying to be sure to check the paper ballot that some place was reporting problems with folks voting one way on screen and the paper ballot printing something different. Oh Geez! Can't trust anything or anybody anymore!

Magnificent, voted just before 10am, #266 at the ballet insertion machine.

I pulled out my list for the more local races that don't have a party affiliation, had to make sure I voted for the conservative.

Dad provided me with the list, he's magnificent too.

Down on the highway overpass a bunch of young folks were holding signs for Gil Gutnick, R MN,

geuss they know they're issues too, magnificent!

Talked to my mom this weekend and explained the candidates to her commercials had her mad at all them. She will vote quick and my stepfather was not sure on how to vote(registered democrat he is)My mom went through the ballot with him and it looks like he will vote with the republicans....sorry Murtha!!!!!!sorry casey! sorry fast eddy!!!!

No line, no wait, showed I.D., took my paper ballot to the box and marked my circles... I was # 198.

No one was in line behind me, but a car did arrive as I was leaving the lot.

I didn't notice where there was any count of how many people were voting.

I voted around 11:30 in a pretty easy atmosphere. The voting machines were nearly all occupied full but I got on right away.

This was the first time I'd used a touch-screen voting machine and I thought it was impressively smooth. They gave me a card, I stuck it into the machine and they took it back. Not sure why that was or how that part works.

But voting was very easy and I thought it was well designed overall. I was able to punch a "Straight Ticket" Republican button that made voting trivial but took too much of the drama out of the process.

I'm in Carroll Township, Washington County, PA (near Pittsburgh). I happen to really not like where I live at all so I'm not sure what its political affiliation is overall. Hopefully by the next election I will have moved :-).

"is that Delay's district? If so did you write in the Lady running in his place?"

No. I am in the district next to DeLay's district. But I have a good feeling that the Republican, Shelly Sekula-Gibbs, will win DeLay's district. There are some pissed-off Republicans in that predominately Republican district and Shelly Sekula-Gibbs did a good job on TV ads to get the word out.

Montgomery County, PA (suburban Phila.) - voted at ~noon, quiet at the polls. There were 2-3 folks out front, but I didn't stop to chat and find out who they were apart from one of our local township commissioners (Dem) whose office had phoned us with statements against McGill and Greenleaf. They were polite. One of them pointed out the ballot initiatives since I clearly wasn't interested in their electioneering. We have a proposals for expenditures supporting Persian Gulf veterans and a local open space acquisition program. Seldom do I support additional government spending, but these I can support.

No problem with the equipment. They are the same touchscreens we've used before (Sierra?). One of the poll workers is a long-time family acquaintance, so we chatted a bit. Check-in process was orderly - no signs of White-Out. I appeared to be the only voter there when I arrived, but another lady was leaving the second booth as I was departing.

Rain is forecast later, and it's mild and overcast now. Our district is pretty divided, but trends Democrat now - it's been changing over time.

I live in a small town just outside Carson City, Nevada. The weather is beautiful - clear and in the low to mid 50's. (We moved here in February so I'm new to the Nevada way to doing things)

I voted at our local community center and it was far more organized than the place we voted in the primary. There were more election officials and they seemed to know what they were doing. They were polite and respectful.

We voted electronically and when finished a paper trail was printed and we were required to verify it too. I'm confident that things will run smoothly and there won't be any problems.

Also....several neighbors said those calls flipped over to their cell phones and they now have big air time charges..(.Ah! The unintended consequences of ambitious people.)

At our polling place, there was a big sign announcing that it was illegal to use your cell phone in the polling place. The only D I voted for was unopposed for a local clerical-type office. Even a Dem can't do much damage in that kind of position.

Here in Mobile, I voted at 830 - was the 110th voter on the scanner (?) they were using and there was three total machines. The line was out the door....we've got no worries here in Alabama but I'm hoping this is a barameter of what the turnout is around the nation. And, it was rainy and a little windy.....Go GOP!!!

In Canton, Ohio the weather was damp and grim, but not cold. Not at least, at 7:30 a.m.

As usual, the people working there were confused, surly and lazy. I think it is a predominantly Democratic area.

The machine did NOT work and they were not in any hurry to rectify the problem. In fact, it was as if their a^%$s were glued to their chairs.

I got it done, though.

I voted this morning in a rural Va. district outside Richmond. I was number 260 to vote (or thereabouts). I voted same time of day in 2004, and was number 180. The line was longer than usual, lots of farmers voting. And, I am in a gerrymandered district with an unopposed Dem congressman, so people were only there to vote on the marriage amendment and the senate race.

Of course this is unscientific anecdotal information from one polling place, but I took it as a good sign. There was NO evidence of a disaffected Republican turnout from what I saw. Quite the opposite.

We had WinVote (?) touchscreens which worked fine - very quick and efficient. No sign of any "observers" from either side.

Outside the polling place (beyond the legal marker of course) Allen signs outnumbered Webb signs 10-1.

And, it looks like we are in for rain this afternoon. BWAHAHAHAH!

Just west of Madison, WI---very, very busy at the polls. It is an extraordinarily beautiful day here! Didn't see any problems, but it was organized differently than in the past and there were lines to get in lines.

Fairfax County, VA (Clifton precinct). Wife and I showed up around 10 AM, had a 30 minute wait to get through the line and to vote.

Fairfax County uses touch screen machines, and has for some years now. No problem with the machines. They had 7 machines set up but only enough workers to supervise 5, and I'm sure that contributed to the wait.

I would say noticeably heavier than a standard non-presidential year.

The Dem and Rep representatives hand out different color sample ballots. Clearly more folks in line with Rep sample ballots than Dem, but this has traditionally been an area that goes 60-65% Rep. Unfortunately, Fairfax County as a whole is becoming reliably Dem.

The ladies at the Fire House had a minor problem with the cartridge that activates the voting machine (touch screen).

At ours, there is a plastic card, like an ATM card. You check in, take the card, and stick it in the slot. That activates the screen. We had 4 screens of stuff to vote for.
