Does (almost certainly) losing the Virginia senate election give George Allen more time to campaign for 2008, like Romney and Frist both stepping down does?
The honeymoon is over.
I'm sure he will not be the next POTUS, but he could force potential nominees to take certain positions. Potential 2008 candidates may take the wrong message from this election cycle.
Allen blew a gimme. He's toast on the national stage. He doesn't have a prayer now, nor should he. John Kerry has a better shot at the Dem. nomination than Allen will at the GOP's.
See, there are these things called "other people" and studies show that sometimes, they don't share your views and opinions about certain people.
Presidential elections require getting millions of these "other people" to vote for the candidate you like. Many of these people are Independents and Democrats and Republicans that don't quite have identical views to you.
And to millions of these other people, Newt Gingrich is a hated, annoying, joke of a has-been.
I really wish sometimes I could just live in the brain of someone that walks around seriously thinking that Newt Gingrich or Tom Tancredo (or, say, Howard Dean, it's not a partisan disease) could be president, just to see how that works.

McCain, thanks to his bad campaign finance reform, spawned the evil that are the Soro 527s - it gave Democrats a leg up over the Republicans, especially the 'outside group' efforts and independent organizations like the NRA and Christian Coalition.
Thanks to McCain's bad amnesty-that-wont-admit-its-amnesty, we split the GOP and created a negative issue *FOR NO GOOD REASON* - instead of more narrow 'fix the border' which is more popular.
So McCain shares blame in the losses today.
Rudy??? At least Allen went up for election this year ... WHERE WAS RUDY? He let an unknown take on Hillary. He let an underdog take on Spitzer ... A RACE HE COULD HAVE WON.
And so it goes.
Give the guys in the arena a shot.

Well, I hold pretty soundly to the Damaged Goods theory. And yes, Allen is, sadly, damaged goods.
He was the incumbent in a southern state which he had already governed. He took on a uniformly weak opponent, and he lost.
There's no coming back on the national scene after that. Not for a very, very, very long time.
It would be like Kerry or Gore running again. Both are absolutely finished. They're already wearing the Loser Label, and they'll never escape it.
No matter how much better a campaign they might run, they will still be associated with the reasons that they lost the first time around. Attention will constantly refocus to their previous loss, about how they are different now, about how they've changed. They can't escape the label of the defeated, and it will follow them.
It's for another Reagan, not another Nixon.
Maybe if he faces a Gore/Kerry ticket...
What a disappointment. What a boob. The Dems went after him the hardest because Rush liked him the best. Now it's over.
Hello tax hikes. Hello St. Hillary. I don't think I'll be able to stomach even Fox with Rangel on at every turn of the road. Yuck. I'm giving up on tv all together.

You are exactly right. He ran a crappy campaign and he would not do well nationally. We are going to have to push for another conservative or *gasp*, I'll say it now...I'll be hoping for Rudy to pull it off. I don't think anyone else can defeat hitlery.
I'm open to any and all suggestions but yes, Allen is dead in the water. And Romney..probably toast as well. I can't think of any conservatives. We are doomed.
I did post on another thread that the one good thing to come out of this is: now that the rats are in charge, gay marriage will become law. I'll be so happy, as a stright woman, to be able to marry either Mary or Joe before I face my impending beheading.
Rudy could have won. He could have won walking away.
Rudy is a Republican, but he's also Rudy. To the American people, he's larger then life. It's not about party labels. It's about him, and he's a superhero to the American people.
