Will Nifong go after bloggers?
November 8, 2006

Posted on 11/08/2006 2:41:16 PM PST by CondorFlight

Now that the election is over and this can't be considered just an election ploy :

Rumors are said to have been circulating in Durham to the effect that Nifong might consider (legally) going after a couple of bloggers; that if he deals with a couple of them the rest will be intimidated and fade away.

This is just a heads up; so that if anything untoward happens, everyone will know about it in advance and be able to make the connection. The rumors are well-sourced.

Good Grief!

What a load of BS.

How the heck can a Durham jury be fair with people like this on it?

How're ya gonna prove the "scumbag" part?

Life-size full-face picture next to a representative sample of a used scumbag should do fine...

It's totally sick.

The woman who wrote this is as bad as those who want to see the boys hang because they are white, even though there was no rape. She wants the boys to hang because they are boys.

He believed her without her telling him what happened. So we should give him credit? I hope this woman isn't reproducing.

I was in a sorority in college and your national would always tell you why you're in trouble. They wouldn't hesitate to inform you again and again, believe me.

Oh man. As if Nifong really believed her. Right. He didn't even care about believing her. And what is up with her critique of the lacrosse players sexual excess? They had a stripper party but I'm not aware of anything else. Frankly, sexual excess describes Precious' behavior alot better than the players.

Baseball team had wild side of its own, former players say

Ned Barnett, Staff Writer, N&O, Apr 09, 2006 02:31 AM [Old news revisited]

Paul DeMarco, a former pitcher at Duke, heard of the Duke lacrosse scandal when his girlfriend called him in Connecticut.

He was not entirely surprised.

The problem at Duke wasn't only a lacrosse problem, he said. The baseball team, he said, also had trouble with heavy drinking, rowdiness and academic problems during his playing years there from 2002 to 2004. The behavior led to frequent meetings with coach Bill Hillier and even a dressing-down by a Duke dean who said she was tired of complaints about baseball players.

Hillier was replaced last spring after six seasons. At that time, Duke's executive vice president, Tallman Trask III, issued a statement that Duke officials were aware of broader problems with the team.

"Senior officials have heard from parents, former players and others about a range of issues, including coaching techniques, morale, attrition among players, inadequate equipment and inappropriate use of alcohol," Trask said.

Despite that recognition, the university did not undertake the kind of sweeping assessment of its athletic culture that has been triggered by the lacrosse team. Had it done so, it might have uncovered conditions similar to what led to the lacrosse incident. The baseball players, too, had a practice of bringing strippers to team parties.

"We always had parties at the baseball house," said DeMarco, now a graduate student at Fairfield University. "The thing to do was to get strippers."

At a party he attended, DeMarco said, the dancer brought an imposing male bodyguard.

"I remember that night with the stripper," he said. "There were video cameras, some big, tough guy there guarding her. It was pretty shady."

DeMarco was rated by Baseball America among the nation's 150 top prospects coming out of high school in Honeoye Falls, N.Y., but a shoulder injury hampered his career at Duke. He said he was a light drinker and didn't want a stripper, especially because the group of about 30 at the party had to contribute $20 each for the show.

It seemed odd to him that athletes at a prestigious school would often drink heavily and hire dancers for special parties.

"At Duke, if you didn't go, you were ostracized, you were picked on," he said. "It was like you better come and you better get really drunk. It was the culture. You had to participate in these things that were not appropriate."

Another former player in DeMarco's class, outfielder Mike Miello, said he attended two spring break parties at baseball houses that featured strippers.

Miello, now completing his Duke education in Atlanta under an arrangement with Emory University, will graduate from Duke this spring. He said drinking was common for the team.

As a high school senior being recruited by Duke, Miello said, he was taken to a campus party by his baseball host and given alcohol. DeMarco said he attended a party where a recruit was passed out drunk on the floor.

Justin Calliham, a former baseball player, wrote to Duke's president, Richard H. Brodhead, on July 6, 2004, to complain about the baseball team under Hillier. Calliham said Hillier's losing record alone should raise questions, but "it is what occurs behind the scenes and amongst the team that should be of concern to someone who has the authority to make a change."

In reply, Brodhead wrote, "I would normally leave these matters to our Director of Athletics, the person most directly responsible for them. However, I will make a point of talking with him about your experience."

Joe Alleva, Duke athletics director, did not respond to phone messages left at his office, on his cell phone and at home by The News & Observer.

Duke baseball drew wide attention last year after former players said they interpreted Hillier's insistence on players adding weight and muscle as encouraging steroid use. Some former players admitted using steroids, but Hillier said he never encouraged it. Testing found no evidence of steroids among players last season.

Alleva accepted Hillier's resignation, saying he was let go because of his Duke record of 121-214. "Bill represented the program with a great deal of class and integrity," Alleva said in a statement.

DeMarco, who is using a final year of eligibility to play baseball at Fairfield, said the oversight at the Connecticut school is very different from that at Duke.

When Fairfield players recently were involved in an off-the-field incident, he said, "our athletic director was livid. I've never seen a anybody so angry. [At Duke] it was different. It happened, and it got handled."
