NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- Air pollution may be just the thing to fight global warming, some scientists say.
Prominent scientists, among them a Nobel laureate, said a layer of pollution deliberately spewed into the atmosphere could act as a "shade" from the sun's rays and help cool the planet.
Reaction to the proposal here at the annual U.N. conference on climate change is a mix of caution, curiosity and some resignation to such "massive and drastic" operations, as the chief U.N. climatologist describes them.
The Nobel Prize-winning scientist who first made the proposal is himself "not enthusiastic about it."
"It was meant to startle the policymakers," said Paul J. Crutzen, of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Chemistry. "If they don't take action much more strongly than they have in the past, then in the end we have to do experiments like this."

Pumping more CFC's into the atmosphere and opening up that ozone hole again would help too.
The Volcanic Eruption of 1991 that Cooled the Planet
by Matt T. Rosenberg
March 9, 2001
In June 1991, the second largest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century* took place on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, a mere 90 kilometers (55 miles) northwest of the capital city Manila. Up to 800 people were killed and 100,000 became homeless following the eruptions, which climaxed with nine hours of eruption on June 15, 1991. On June 15, millions of tons of sulfur dioxide were discharged into the atmosphere, resulting in a decrease in the temperature worldwide over the next few years.
The cause is the cure. Smog is bad, but now it's good. Global warming causes global cooling. Cigarettes cause global warming but volcanoes don't.
WTF, these whackfu@ks can't keep a story line straight.
Skiing in New England was great that particular year! Nothing so far this year.... Maybe I'll pour a few gallons of diesel onto the leaves before I burn them.
I have read that changing jet fuel a little could produce this result.
Smog is bad, period. Smog is not sulphates, and smog is not the system being proposed. Smog is primarily noxious Nitrogen oxide complexes and carbon particulates. Cigarettes are inconsequential with regard to global warming. The only bit of fact in the quote above is that, on net, volcanoes don't cause global warming.
Nonsense such as that quoted in italics is simply ignorant of reality.
China is leading the fight against global warming then...
(they are the #1 polluter in the world).
The real problem is the sun, if we could get rid of it, then our warming problems would be solved.
