Looks like Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 is trying to be forced on to one's computer. My updates just converted Explorer 6 to 7.
I hear IE 7 is supposed to be a big improvement over IE 6. As for Firefox, you can't go wrong there. It's fairly solid.
you can remove it, and prevent it from trying to upgrade it again.
Thanks....How so?
It tried to do that to me too, but I opted for Custom Updates rather than Express and was able to exclude it (for now). I think I'll wait for the first service patch to be issued before I upgrade to it.
It was forced onto one buddy's computer and wrecked a lot of links. I repaired them manually, but ultimately Ayieeeeeeeeeeeee! (er, I mean "IE") is a massive pipe perfect for pumping sewage onto your hard drive.
I've been using Mozilla/Firefox for more than four years, and highly recommend it. (Be sure to get Thunderbird for email too.)

The day when Microsoft let you make the decisions about what gets installed on your computer have come and gone. If you run Windows, get used to it. Microsoft owns your PC. They honestly believe they own the whole industry.
Thanks, Ivan
I just received a new laptop from dell. Loaded with crap that I didn't order or want. Free trials etc. Especially annoying, Google toolbar, Google search, Mcaffe internet suite, junk and more junk!
I have and use both, mostly Firefox. The new IE 7.0 is a lot better than 6 so you might consider using it. Firefox works great but it still requires many "extensions" to make it do what it's capable of. Extensions, meaning you can customize it for your needs. There should not be a conflict using both so you can do that as well as you choose which one you want to stay with.
I have played around with KUbuntu, and I like it so far.
thanks. never heard of swiftfox till now.
Piece of crap *still" cant resize
text worth a turd...Much less allow
the user to set a personal default
for text size.
Whenever MS updates wants you to download something...select Custom install. This will allow you to de-select any updates you don't want.
Of course, you need to have Updates set to alert you but do nothing until you say so.
I've been asked 4 times to upgrade to IE7. 4 times I have refused. Firefox rules.
I'm just tired of startup being loaded with so much crap that I don't want.
I love firefox and I really like the add ons for the personalized home page....good luck
I do have one PC with PC BSD, and that runs KDE - it's fine, as sophisticated as anything you'll find out there.

Our intranet doesn't work well with Firefox either.

Just one more reason why I won't move the company's computers off of Windows 2000.
I've never really noticed a speed increase when Firefox is built for your processor. I've used Gentoo for 4 years (source based distro you compile every thing for your specific processor) And i cant tell the difference between the optomised or the binary one. Though I haven't taken the time to benchmark it :-P
I specifically didn't order MS word as I paid for it 2 years ago. Came with a 45 day free trial MS small business. Had to uninstall it to load my program.
But I got it running like a fine swiss watch;)
I haven't compared the two for memory footprint, etc..
Microsoft's main objective seems to be making operating systems and applications that are slower, larger and more demanding. Somewhere in the shuffle, quality, reliability and efficiency got laid off.
I like Firefox.
How many PCs do you have running Windows? And how long have you been a Windows user?
I have never had anything MS foisted on me without my express knowledge or consent.
I'm not saying your sentiment is incorrect, just the statement that MS has taken the decision making process out of the user's hands.
Regards, Ivan
Your's too, huh? I turned off the automatic update because I couldn't do ANY work without it popping up every other minute. I tried to download IE 7 last week, but it was a bust.
Firefox is awesome! I hardly ever use IE anymore. I don't know if Firefox works for updating MS office software, though.
I tried that this a.m. and it didn't work for me. One, it's not listed in "add remove programs", so I had to go to "add remove windows components", removed it(or so it seemed), then dl'd IE6, dbl cliked it and it said "you have a newer version of IE installed already" and quit. Guess I'm stuck with it now.
btw, as much as I use firefox I must say it can't handle uploading attachments in yahoo mail. Why? Who knows, but when I MUST upload attachments in yahoo mail I MUST go to IE.
You'll be so happy I saw this. Go here:

Simply a wonderful app for Dell buyers.
Thanks....How so?
Uh, why? It's a big improvement over IE 6. And you can run Firefox with or without IE 7.
I too use Firefox, almost exclusively. Another good browser is Opera 9. Version 9 is much better than previous Opera versions. It has the fastest Javascript interpreter I've found (faster than either Firefox or IE) and is mostly compatibile with Firefox.
For email I use Gmail. I like the way it streamlines the workflow and organizes your mail. It also has a highly effective spam filter. I mostly use it thru its AJAX web interface, however, when composing mail, I sometimes use Thunderbird. (The web interface doesn't support imbedding images in HTML mail, however, the web interface displays them just fine. So, I just start up Thunderbird, compose, and send.)
It is useless to fight it human you will be assimilated.

Good call. It's especially good for those unpleasant emails.
Make sure you have updates (box) at top selected at add/remove then hunt for it. It was at the top of my microsoft updates.
Aside from some minor irritations (e.g., button placement), I like IE7.
I knew there had to be something out there to de-louse dell computers. Too bad I didn't find this a month ago.
If it is so good then why is it named so distractingly, Uhrurhu? Lo siento, Yo spika d' Engrish. I saw that word on a church bulletin. The name is not the thing.

Took an intuitive leap and performed the download/install for IE7....
Everything was magically back to normal....
Can't help but wonder if MS provided to marginal sabotage to IE6 in order to force the issue....
I know... I know.... tin foil hats....
Easy with the flames -- this is how it happened for us on two different machines...
My first Dell, I manually removed most of the crud. Must have left fragments, because I got a bunch of errors on every reboot. So I called Dell support with the specific errors. (I do IT Supprot for a living; figured they'd have some instructions specific to Dell pc's, save me time.)
Well, ol' Vinosh, or Guru, or whoever it was, asked me questions I'd just answered several times. Then he unveiled his big solution:
Reinstall Windows XP.
Well, I'd just finished migrating my files and installing all my apps, so I said thanks, hung up, and just figured it out.
Now with the second Dell, I used the Decrapifier. Took a repeat and a couple of tweaks, but it was really sweet.
You are barmy, you know that, don't you?
Ivan
Here at work, I'm responsible for 130 PCs and 15 servers, all running Windows 2000 or 2003. I currently have... umm... four at home, running ME (Probably downgrade to 98 soon), Win2K Pro, XP Home and HP Pro, respectively. I have been running Windows since MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1, with DOS 3.3 before it. That would be since around 1988 or so.
I'm an MCSE (the kind WITH experience) and CompTIA certified.
You?
I have never had anything MS foisted on me without my express knowledge or consent.
Sure you have! You just might not have known it. They hide stuff in "critical updates", as IE7 was. They also tie stuff together so Application A won't work without Application B or O/S version C, etc. True, it isn't outright FORCE per se, but coercion and arm-twisting are what Microsoft do best.
The best feature of IE 7 is that you can remove it....
