Ammunition Question .22 Cal
12/10/06 | Bear_Slayer

Posted on 12/10/2006 10:43:49 AM PST by Bear_Slayer

I've recently begun purchasing bulk .22 ammo and thought that Freeper input would once again be helpful in getting the most bang for my buck.

What do you recommend for .22 caliber ammunition?

What various grain do they come in? What brand of .22 is the most deadly?

I suppose so. :-)

I vaguely recall an expert big game hunter that hunted with .22 LR only. I can't remember the details of it, but he hunted elephant with it.

Errhh, 'deadly' and '.22' don't usually go together ;-)

Well, I suppose if we're talking squirrels...

Depends on what you want to do with your shooter. I never buy bulk cheap .22 ammo unless it's for the kids to plink with. You don't need to buy match grade ammo, but I'll never know why people strive for accuracy and then buy cheap ammo. What you need to do is to try various ammos and see which runs best in your gun. One gun might like a different ammo than another gun.

Go to http://rimfirecentral.com for a real education on rimfires.

Virtually all are deadly if you attempt to slay a bear with a .22. Unfortunately it would be deadliest to you.

Are you kidding? You'll shoot your eye out!

but series, the .22 is quite deadly, it just usually takes longer to bleed out.

There is a book, "cartridges of the world"- in the sport section of any Barnes and Noble. There you will find all you might ever need on 22LR, 22 short and 22 magnum. 22 is good for plinking, and- if subsonic- for silenced firearms used in animal control. More expensive grades are used in competitions [biathlon, free pistol].

Federal seems to clog the action less than some other brands.

Elephant? I don't think a .22LR will penetrate an elephant's skin, for crying out loud.
