U.S. Congressman Calls For DA Probe In Duke Rape Case
WRAL TV ^ | December 12, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A congressman wants a federal investigation into Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong and the way he has handled a rape investigation involving three Duke University lacrosse players.

Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to review the case, having accused Nifong of making prejudicial statements to the media and telling police to violate identification procedures.

In a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Jones also highlighted the fact that Nifong has never spoken directly with the accuser, a 27-year-old exotic dancer, about the case.

Well, it's about time someone got on Nifong's back about this. The man is totally corrupt, and should be thrown out of office.

That's too bad. David Price should be doing this, but as a Democrat he's not allowed to question Nifong.

As an attorney I am appalled at the misconduct and incompetence from Nifong in this case. That said, I am not sure what a Congressman can do about it. If nothing else there is a bully platform to hammer him from.

Isn't that the truth. Finally Walter Jones does SOMETHING about SOMETHING (besides French fries).

Prediction:

The guys accused aren't going to have to finish their studies, they're going to be rich beyond their wildest dreams of success in the business world when their lawyers get done with Nifong and the county.

I don't know at this point if it's a "Federal case" but where is the North Carolina AG? When there is prosecutoral misconduct at the county level, it seems that state officials should be looking into it.

I have often wondered what a citizen could do against a corrupt prosecutor, judge, police officer, etc.

Ditto, I have found out more about the law in NC during this case than I did when I was a court reporter!

Evidently, neither the governor OR the AG can take this case over!

This is one case where I hope that's true. Nifong is the one who should be in jail.

While I completely agree that Nifong is a complete incompetent (at best), I hate to see the Feds brought in for a local/state issue.

Good for Congressman Jones, he is at least trying to do something regarding this fiasco.

(copied from a post on another board) ---

Thank heaven for Congressman Jones!

Write, phone, or FAX him or his office and encourage him; and then CALL your own Congressman's local office (a FREE CALL!) or call him in DC (only a few cents!) ask him
to join with Jones!

(My only beef is why Jones is the ONLY member of Congress so far to act. They should ALL be involved in this if they really support civil rights, the constitution, and the right to a fair trial.
And also call for an investigation of Durham!)

I hate to see it, too, but what are we here in NC to do, just sit back and watch this just because he's a DA?
