If your cell phone rings while you're riding your bicycle on any public road in New Jersey, you better not answer it while peddling!
A bi-partisan bill drafted by Republican Assemblyman John Bramnick and co-sponsored by Democratic Assemblywoman Linda Stender, would make biking while talking on your cell phone in New Jersey, punishable with a 100 to 250 dollar fine. There's already buzz that this is just another bill that attempts to modify behavior...and Assemblyman Bramnick admits...it is...
"Its a behavior modification bill and its a safety bill, and that's exactly what government does. Government regulates people's activities. If it gets to a point in society where people don't use common sense, then that's when government steps in," says Bramnick.
Bramnick also admits that though he has no evidence of phoning while biking being a problem, he drafted the measure based on his observations. He adds that he'd also be happy to explore other bicycling distractions...like riding with one hand! The bill heads to the full assembly for a vote.

How about curbing the practice of unsafe legislating? Seems like the folks in that state are in desperate need to protection! Then again, look at who they elect and then shake your heads in wonder when they complain.
Stender the big spender?
< Longing for the good old days when people regulated government >
I'm more concerned about people driving a 3000 pound car while on the cell phone. I don't think I'm going to get hurt by a bicycle.
Good God!
What about coasting downhill while not peddling? Can someone use their cell phone then? What about smoking while riding a bike? Maybe there should be air bags on bicycles. Where does the lunacy end? Obviously, not in New Jersey.
>>>Then again, look at who they elect and then shake your heads in wonder when they complain.
Elect? No one here is elected. Even though the State of NJ was under Federal Orders NOT to use their voter registration "legacy" system which contains DEAD voters and People that long moved away, they did it anyway.

The State of New Jersey is not in compliance with several provisions of Section 303(a) of HAVA, and was not in compliance by January 1, 2006.
21. Defendants violations of Section 303(a) of HAVA include the following:
(a) Defendants have not completed a computerized statewide voter registration list that serves as the sole system for managing and storing the State's list of registered voters, see 42 U.S.C. § 15483(a)(1)(A)(i);
(b) Defendants' current computerized statewide list does not contain the name and registration information for all legally registered voters in the State, see 42 U.S.C. § 15483(a) (1)(A)(ii);
(c) Defendants cannot use the current computerized statewide list as the official registration list for the November 2006 general election, which include elections for federal office in the State, see 42 U.S.C. § 15483(a)(1)(A)(viii);
(d) Defendants have not performed list maintenance on the statewide computerized registration list by removing duplicate registrations from the list, see 42 U.S.C. § 15483(a)(2)(B)(iii); and
(e) Defendants have not required applicants for voter registration to provide a driver's license number (if they have such number) or the last four digits of the applicant's social security number (if the applicant does not have driver's license number) on voter registration applications, see 42 U.S.C. § 15483(a)(5)(A)(i).
They still used the "legacy" system:

Excerpt:
A stipulation and order agreement between the state and federal governments provides New Jersey additional time to implement a statewide voter registration database while ensuring that the November 7 general election operates fairly and guarantees all eligible voters the right to vote, Attorney General Stuart Rabner announced today.
The agreement allows the postponement of full implementation of the statewide voter registration system, which was scheduled to be in effect under provisions of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and a related state law. Instead, the state will use the existing county voter registration rolls as the official system for this fall's election.
Biking is safer than driving so if bikers can't use cell phones people in cars better not be able to use them.
LOL!
Seriously though, if this passes, we have to carry a license to bike?
It is against the law to be on the phone while driving in our state.
What about a 15 year old? They aren't licensed drivers. How will they be ticketed?
Amen.
But what if it is the government that doesn't use commmon sense?
