N.J. Warns: Don't Eat Squirrel Near Dump

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey has warned squirrel hunters near a toxic waste dump about consuming the critters because they could be contaminated with lead.

It is the first time the state has cautioned Ringwood residents - many who are members of the Ramapough Mountain Indian tribe who hunt and fish in the area - about their squirrel intake, said Tom Slater, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Senior Services.

A lead-contaminated squirrel was found in the area two months ago, prompting the agency, along with the state Department of Environmental Protection, to send out letters advising that adults eat squirrel no more than twice a week and even less for children and pregnant women.

Lead, which is harmful in small amounts, can damage the nervous system, red blood cell production and the kidneys.

Possum? I'd just as soon cook an armadillo. Crow sounds good by comparison.

I'll try your recipe if you can locate me an armadillo.

Hi All-

Lots of people use Ringwood State Park / Skylands Manor due to its cool mountainbiking terrain and large acreage for hiking. There is a lake for swimming, but I have no idea whether it's natural or manmade. Never heard of or have witnessed anyone harvesting squirrels for eating. Doesn't sound too appetizing to me...

"...eat squirrel no more than twice a week..."

Hello! Who the hell are these people? And why are they eating squirrel even once a week? Are there little known places in New Jersey where one can slip into a serious time-warp and wind up in some depressed hillbilly universe where squirrels and other 'critters' are the Saturday night menu specials?

Yes, there truly are. There are parts of Hamburg Mountain that are downright scary. If you recall, a year or so ago a small plane crashed up that way and it took days to find it. Ppl were amazed that could happen in jersey, because all they know about jersey they learned from watching retarded hbo soap operas.

How do you get 'em to stay under?

Diving belts. Getting them into their little wet suits though can be tricky

Lord forgive me. I thought the headline said "Don't eat squirrel dumps".
