Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday morning after complications from his breakdown at the Preakness last May.
"We just reached a point where it was going to be difficult for him to go on without pain," co-owner Roy Jackson said. "It was the right decision, it was the right thing to do. We said all along if there was a situation where it would become more difficult for him then it would be time."

There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some Paradise where horses go.
For by the love that guides my pen

That's terrible. They said he was bright eyed, eating well and nipping at people just yesterday.

Just tried to post...very sad.
I wonder if he would have been able to cover a mare with the cast on his leg. Admittedly I know nothing of the sport, so I'm unsure if this would have violated any rules.

I don't think that's allowed, is it?
To: Moonman62
Really? The reports I saw this weekend said he was in a lot of pain. I think they did the right thing, but so sorry they had to do it.

Everything that could have been done was. It's amazing how much energy, time, and money went into Barbaro.

How sad! He had heart, though, and that's how he lasted this long. A brave little horse, and I'm glad they didn't put him through surgery again.

Sold to the French? A great horse deserves a better fate. Bury him at Churchill Downs. France already has enough horse's asses.

sperm on ice somewhere They can make nice horses but are not allowed not to breed thoroughbreds artificially
To: Andy'smom; Lonesome in Massachussets
You would probably wind up with a spectacular horse, but it would not be eligible for racing nor would any of it's offspring.

Everything that could have been done was. It's amazing how much energy, time, and money went into Barbaro. Hopefully, because of the treatment given to Barbaro, some of the things learned from the experience will help other horses in the future.

That was poorly edited - they are not allowed to breed thoroughbreds artificially.

You would probably wind up with a spectacular horse, but it would not be eligible for racing nor would any of it's offspring. Why is that (I am asking the question honestly). What is the difference between that and putting him out to stud?
Is there a rule that it has to happen "naturally?"

He must have taken a turn for worse and been sufferring.
I know they did what they felt was the best for Barbaro.

They must have.
I was impressed with what I read right after the race. 10 high profile months later must have advanced things.

www.timwoolleyracing.com The above site has updates from insiders. You have to poke around a bit, it's not well organized. The site is bogged down now for obvious reasons.

I remember back when I was a kid when Ruffian had to be put down, and how devastating that was. I think the difference here is that I think we were more prepared for this, even when Barbaro was doing well, there still was a sense that it was an uphill battle.

Run free, Barbaro.
