Barbaro is euthanized

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday morning after complications from his breakdown at the Preakness last May.

"We just reached a point where it was going to be difficult for him to go on without pain," co-owner Roy Jackson said. "It was the right decision, it was the right thing to do. We said all along if there was a situation where it would become more difficult for him then it would be time."

They must have.

I was impressed with what I read right after the race. 10 high profile months later must have advanced things.

The above site has updates from insiders. You have to poke around a bit, it's not well organized. The site is bogged down now for obvious reasons.

This makes me so unbelievably sad. He had come so far, and I was really praying for miracles.

So, so sad.

I remember back when I was a kid when Ruffian had to be put down, and how devastating that was. I think the difference here is that I think we were more prepared for this, even when Barbaro was doing well, there still was a sense that it was an uphill battle.

~sigh~ They really did try. ...That all horses injured in our service had the care and love that he did.

Run free, Barbaro.

Ping!

God always answers prayers, but sometimes the answer is No.

They can make nice horses but are not allowed not to breed thoroughbreds artificially

Damn, stud horses have one helluva great union. As Dick Schaap said about Secretariat's retirment, he's living every American boy's dream.

Frankly I felt they were trying to improve horse medicine using Barbaro as some sort of experiment for the future. Which in my mind is a good thing. They have to start somewhere. It is so sad that so many great horses have to be put down for what to humans is a minor injury.

I hope the docs. did learn a lot and while the result with this particular horse was not as hoped for they did gain tons of knowledge from him over the last 9 or so months.
