Word For The Day, Thursday, February 1, 2007 - pellucid
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | February 1, 2007 | secret garden

Posted on 02/01/2007 6:09:11 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

pellucid \puh-LOO-sid\, adjective
1. Transparent; clear; not opaque.
2. Easily understandable.

Example sentences:
The prevailing atmosphere as one cruises Kukulcan Boulevard, the busy strip where most of Cancun's 122 hotels are clustered, remains that of an Orlando or a Las Vegas dropped intact next to pellucid Caribbean waters.
-- Larry Rohter, "What's Doing in Cancun.", New York Times, March 8, 1998

In her scrupulous and pellucid prose, she appears to distance herself from the optimistic Californian light.
-- Cynthia Ozick, "What Writer's Writers Write.", New York Times Magazine, January 2, 2000

Etymology:
Pellucid comes from Latin pellucidus, "shining, transparent," from pellucere, "to shine through," from per-, "through" + lucere, "to shine."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

For dust?

They cancelled all the schools in my county yesterday, but we did have roughly a foot of snow.

The latest talk from the liberals isn't palucid, but rather transparently traitorous. Immediately denied, of course.

...

And, if LE isn't careful about who buys out her new (latest purchased) company, she may end up working for Western Electric (er, Lucid Technologies) again....

glad you got your snowday. xsteen is predicting the following secnario: snow later today which will NOT cause the headmaster to allow them to leave early, that she will have a tough time with the roads getting home, but that things will be hunky dory for school in the AM. she is DESPERATE for a snowday.

Now her brother's school is the situs of the Father Drinan funeral today, and she was so sure that Gonzaga would get the day off for the dead priest that it was the first thing she asked when she got home yesterday. they have school, but mourners were arriving as i dropped him off this AM.

Speaker un-pellucid,
That gramma so Pelosi,
One more face job, you see,
And she'll sport a goatee,
And be called un-Bella Lugosi.

[reposted here from yesterday's WFTD - due to teacher's tardingess today]

File this under "Quote of the Day"...OR "Why Intelligent People Love Ann Coulter":

"The exact same people who are now demanding prison for Libby for not remembering who told him about Plame are the ones who told us it was perfectly plausible for Bill Clinton to forget that Monica Lewinsky repeatedly performed oral sex on him in the Oval Office." - Ann Coulter, 2/1/07.

They said the roads in the county are unsafe. Usually we get more ice than snow.
