Issue with Windows Defender Update
Free Republic ^ | February 07, 2007 | Me

Posted on 02/07/2007 3:10:46 PM PST by streetpreacher

I have been having a recurring problem with this Windows Update for the last few months.  No matter how many times I accept the update, install it, it always "returns" at another time.  If I uncheck and then check "do not notify me about this update again", it still returns anyway.  Has anyone else had an issue with this?

Maybe I would just be better off to uninstall Windows Defender?

It's been almost 3 minutes. What's the hold up?

I'm sorry, we've failed you. Oh well, no worse than Windows Defender has.

:D

Ya happy now???

Yes, uninstall it. If it doesn't work/update what good it is?

It's gotten to the point where your choices are:

1. delete rubbish files from folders and the registry

2. reinstall Windows and start over

I don't bother with Defender -- it's useless

My luck, Defender is one of those programs you can't uninstall or it's so rooted in the registry that I'll keep getting these infernal updates.

No. 1 is what I'm afraid of.

I guess I was just curious to know if I'm having an issue other than with Defender itself, IOW, could something on my end be causing this issue? Unlikely I suppose.

Yes.

There are plenty of free alternatives.

Spybot Search & Destroy (TeaTimer) is an old favorite.

More recently, I've been looking at Spyware Terminator. Check out the features. Among other things, it integrates the open-source ClamAV.

Posts regarding it at the Spywarewarrior.com forum are positive. It certainly looks promising.

Get a copy of "Your UNinstaller" and install it. It will completely uninstall anything AND remove all those garbage and orphaned registry entries that get left behind after Windows "uninstalls" a program.
It is worth its weight in gold especially if you are not comfortable searching and editing your registry.

Then get rid of Windows Defender. It is useles as stated in an earlier post. Get Spybot S & D and AdAware. Or spend some money on Webroot Spysweeper. Any of these 3 are better than Defender.

I had this issue with the Word reader. Eventually I just ignore it.

Windows Defender hasn't updated right in a while either, I try uninstalling and reinstalling but I have 3-4 spyware programs so I don't pay too much attention anymore.

I have Tea Timer but I can't read the responses. I keep meaning to look up how to fix but maybe you know.

I do have AdAware. It did seem that after adding Defender, I had less spyware issues but it may be like Norton, the cure is worse than the sickness.

You may as well uninstall Windows Defender, it sucks anyway. I recall having a similar issue with Windows Update doing the same thing on Outlook Express, and I didn't even have that POS email program installed. It eventually stopped doing it over time. I'm not sure why it stopped flagging it for update.

Does it show up in Control Panel\AddRemove Programs\AddRemove Windows Components? You may be able to get rid of it there. You may also try msconfig to disable it.

Notwithstanding the obvious jokes and flames, here's a serious post.

What you are getting are virus definition updates. All AV products update their virus definitions as new virii emerge. MS is just providing you with the most up-to-date information that they have.

This is a good. thing, and you are not experiencing any problems with this.
