Unbelievable pictures of what happens to a pitbull after tangling with a porcupine!
I've never tried porcupine, but I wouldn't be adverse to it (once the spines had been removed, thank you). I don't imagine it would be too different from groundhog/woodchuck/whistle pig, and as a PA native, I've eaten plenty of those.
I was thinking the same thing, and wondering why they were taking pictures of him instead of putting him out of his misery.?

Yup...been there, done that with my daughter's stupid Dalmation. It took 4 of us to hold him down and pull the quills out of the roof of his mouth. We used that baby antiseptic called Numzit to deaden the pain and needle-nose pliers to pull the quills out. Bad part is, the stupid dog did it again two weeks later. He also turned out to be a serial chicken/duck killer. We came home one day and he had massacred 6 chickens and 2 ducks, the feathers covered half an acre. Unfortunately, they were the neighbor's chickens and ducks so we had to give him away rather than see him shot if he did it again. Personally, I was glad to see him go.
Talk about a bad day, I had a wild cat Wednesday that climbed the wall of the clinic and got into my ceiling....been two days trying to trap the cat so far. I can hear him traveling back and forth up there.
Oh man. An angry cat loose on top of a suspended ceiling? Good luck.

Open the ceiling, place a 6 foot step ladder under the opening with some cat food on a napkin on top to attract the cat to the opening. Then open a window in the same room. Close the door to the room and wait about an hour or two. The cat will probably be gone when you come back.
The quills only go in a tiny bit. It might not even hurt as bad as it looks. They sedate the dog until he's conked out, then they do an hour's work with a needle-nose pliers yanking out the quills one by one.
One veterinarian posted on his website how he treated the same dumb dog three weekends in a row that looked as bad as the dog pictured here. The dog just wouldn't give up.
I even bet the porcupine survived too. That's what they're designed for.

and this thread is a good example of how easily people incorrectly identify a dog. ;~)
How is groundhog for eating?
When I'd have a young dog develop that porcupine thing; I'd just leave them in woods and start with another pup. I think that's how it was always done to get better hunting dogs down thru history.

Time to shoot the dog. It would be an act of mercy.
Buy or rent a Have-a-Hart trap from a grain and feed store. Bait it with tuna.
The vet who get this job will make a bundle. When our collie used to get into it with a porky, our vet charged by the quill.
It is the crowning glory of the recipe my brother and I came up with for "road-kill chili," a medley of groundhog, squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, grouse and venison. It is a little on the oily/fatty side, 'though not as much as bear (of course you'd know more about that than I!). In my experience, their diet has a LOT of impact on the flavor and texture of the meat, and I could generally tell the difference between a groundhog that had been hanging out in and around a cornfield from one that had been living on clover...I suppose the closest comparison I could draw to other wild meat would be rabbit, though, like I said above, it's generally fattier.
This is just my personal theory, but since most groundhogs are taken "sniper style" and don't know they're in trouble until it's too late, the quality of the meat benefits from the absence of any adrenaline shot that will taint the meat of an animal that knows it's being pursued.
