I haven't watched the Oscars in 30 years. I found that I didn't care who won. I didn't care seeing which starlet was with which star or wearing whatever dress. I particularly didn't like the creeping left wing politics of the Oscars.
Eddie Murphy's movies (most of them) are funny. I enjoyed Beverly Hill's Cop, but he still irritates me and his vile humor is awful.

George C Scott and Marlon Brando have both indicated that the Oscars is a long drawn out boring event and pretty much a hassle to attend.

At least Scott and Brando had the strength of their convictions and didn't even attend. In fact Scott called it a 'meat parade' IIRC.

I don't think Scott's career ever really recovered from his snub. He peaked with Patton. Is it really so hard to sit through this thing one time, smile graciously and say thank you when you win? Movie making is very much a group effort and Scott's Oscar reflected well on the entire cast and crew. And his snub was an insult to all of them, IMHO.

As for Brando, well, he was just nuts.

Eddie has said on more than one occasion, that he doesn't much care for most of the people in Hollywood. In my book that makes Eddie one of the good guys. He'll show up to collect his award (or not), but he doesn't have to rub elbows with them any longer than necessary.

They had all the nominees on camera and I specifically watched Murphy. My memory is that he smilled and applauded when the announcement was made.
