Celebrating the Birth of a Hero and Texas’ Independence

The Huntsville Item

Everyone is invited to join the Walker County Historical Commission today as county residents celebrate the birth of Gen. Sam Houston, the anniversary of Texas’ independence and Walker County Pioneer Day.

The festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and a reception at the Gibbs-Powell House at 1228 11th Street.

A march to Sam Houston’s gravesite in Oakwood Cemetery begins at 10 a.m. at Austin Hall on the Sam Houston State University campus.

The ceremony at the gravesite at Spur 94 and 9th Street starts at 11 a.m. Robert Schaat, director of the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center, will address the group.

In addition, the SHSU Alumni Association will dedicate markers to former presidents of SHSU.

A reservation-only luncheon will follow the march at 12:30 p.m. at the Katy and E. Don Walker Sr. Education Center on 19th Street.

The day’s events will conclude with a toast to Texas and a birthday cake for Houston at the Sam Houston Statue and Visitors Center on state Highway 75 South at 2 p.m.
