(AP) LOS ANGELES -- Isaiah Washington does the healing as a doctor on "Grey's Anatomy." But he's the patient now, in therapy for his use of an anti-gay slur against a castmate.

In a statement Wednesday, Washington said he has begun counseling in what he describes as a "necessary step toward understanding why I did what I did and making sure it never happens again."

Washington took a break from filming Wednesday to meet with gay rights activists.

Series creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes issued her own statement, at once criticizing Washington for calling co-star T.R. Knight a gay and lauding Washington's decision to seek help.
