CLIFTON The allegedly drunk driver of an SUV made an obscene gesture at Colorado State Patrol troopers as they tried to stop him on Interstate 70 moments before he plowed at 120 mph into the back of a passenger car and killed two college students, authorities said today.
Patrick Strawmatt, 42, a former officer with the Lafayette police department, was jailed for investigation of vehicular homicide and DUI.
He had to be extricated from the wreckage and during the process, "He resisted and attempted to spit on" firefighters, patrol Trooper Ron Greasley said.
Jennifer Kois of Brighton and Jacob Brock of Eagle, both 19, believed to be students at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, both died in the crash. Their car was demolished.

My brother is an EMT and tells me about guys like this just often enough for me to know I could never do what he does.
in cases like this, it should be done on site.
Yep.
Too bad the firefighters didn't have charged hoses.
God bless the parents; he owes them.
He should get the death penalty. He should meet his death by killed by being run into by a speeding car.

From the looks of the mug shot it appears as though the crash gave this p.o.s. some streetside justice.
Strawmatt was involved in another high speed chase last month where he was allegedly drunk.
All in favor of slowly inserting this sleezebag into an industrial metal shredder (feet first, of course!), raise your hand...
Hmmm...
Unanimous vote!
This is the most horrible thing I read today. This POS needs to die. Unfortunately, many drunk drivers still get slaps on the wrist. A few years ago, my wife and kids got hit by a drunk driver, coming home from the grocery store about midday. My wife was injured and still has back problems--luckily my kids recovered fully. He was already driving on a suspended license with no insurance and ended up getting a fine and community service--no jail time. My heart goes out to the parents of those kids. I can't imagine their pain.
No, just leave him in the wreckage, pour in some gasoline, and then set a few flares to warn other drivers.
Just a flare.
Oops...
Next week it will be other deaths involving drunk drivers in other places. Strange society we live in, where thousands of people will protest the deaths of people who die in a war we're fighting while at the same time ignoring the deaths of two or three times that amount that die on our highways needlessly every year !!!
Most of the time, when I hear about a drunk driver killing others, the drunk driver is dead too.
4...no one seems to be protesting the "quagmire" and "lack of progress" of DUI deaths much less burning chronic DUI-ers in effigy.
My mother-in-law was arrested last summer for her EIGHTH DUI. She spent all of one day in jail, spent 3 months on house arrest (and was allowed to go to work and have extra time out of the house), and had an ignition lock required only for those 3 months. It's a travesty.
Let me rephrase myself.
"He should meet his death by being run into by a speeding car."
That is what I meant to say.
In reading the article, it says both teens were "ejected" from the car.
Not saying that the drunk driver doesn't deserve to go to a special hell, but I gotta wonder if the teens were wearing their seat belts.
You don't usually hear of people being "ejected" from a vehicle unless seat belts were not in use. There are no pictures of the victims' car so it's kinda hard to say from the information given in the story.
Prayers for the teens families, this is just horrible.
