Toddler Caught on Camera Handling an AK-47 (New Orleans)

NEW ORLEANS, LA -- Louisiana pawnshop manager Dan Reese said he never thought he'd see a diaper-clad 2-year-old holding an AK-47.

But that's exactly what happened inside BJ's Pawn Shop, Reese said.

The toddler's father gave him the gun and proceeded to show the child how to hold, load and operate it.

"He's telling the boy, 'This is how you hold it, like this. Anybody in front of you, you can mow them down. Kill everybody, soldier, because daddy's going to buy you this chopper,' repeating it over and over," Reese said.

The store's surveillance video also shows the father and son marching around the store, showcasing the weapon.

With an assault rifle slung over the toddler's shoulder, Reese said he drew the line, took away the weapon and shut the gun case.

According to Reese, the father got angry and wanted to fight, but he never got the man's name.

Reese also said he'll sell AK-47s only to police officers now.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee said he was concerned about the incident but said that the father didn't break any laws.

would any of you guys critical of his inarticulateness dare walk nekkid down the street in his part of town?

Um...I usually don't make a habit of walking nekkid down any street in any part of town. :-)

I wasn't critical of his inarticulateness, just his encouragement to his two year old son to mow people down.

"mow 'em down" is probably as articulate as he's going to get.

Or, maybe "shoot 'em up".

"W" gets criticized for this all the time and it's quite obvious it's nothing more than the result of a mild aphasia typical of those pilots who did 50% more time than was healthy flying a jet fighter.

I'd defer to judging this guy only after he put it to paper and had it edited by a Cambridge don.

Must have been some kid. How many 2 year olds do you know who could march around with a 10 pound gun slung over their shoulder?

I guess I’m the only one who feels this story isn’t passing the smell test.

It's a "non story" ~ I'll check this for rap lyrics in a few minutes. Up in the Big Apple an undercover cop overheard Eminem's "Get My Gun" being chanted/sung/hummed/played and next thing you know people all over the place were getting shot ~ by cops!

This young man is quite lucky the gun shop owner could tell the difference between "wuff" and "threat".

An AK 47 is a little too much gun for a two year old, unless he is big for his age. A 22 caliber revolver would be more appropriate. ;-)

Something isn’t right about this story. Harry Lee is not the Sheriff of New Orleans. Perhaps this happened in a neighboring community.

Really. Do you that the words Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee might possibly provide a clue?

The byline reads “New Orleans, LA” and obviously this incident did not take place there. That’s all. No need to get your panties in a bunch, Oztrich BOY.

Kill everybody, soldier, because daddy's going to buy you this chopper

There is nothing wrong with teaching a child how to handle a firearm, but teaching a child to "kill everybody" is definitely pushing it.

Obviously the potential buyer has little confidence in the ability of police to protect individuals.

For a buyer in New Orleans, that's definitely very believable.

I’m sure your dad was not showing you how to mow down PEOPLE. I shot a 9mm (with my dad) when i was 12 years old. But my dad was not showing me how to shoot people. He was showing me that guns are nothing to play with. That they are very powerful. I think there is a difference between teaching your kid about guns and glorifying them. If that guy would have brought that gun home... that lil boy would have been crying to play with it. To that 2 year old boy, that gun was a TOY!
