An accurate count of the AK47 type rifles confiscated in the Gulf of Aden on 28 August 2018, has been released. During 2016, the U.S. Navy intercepted and confiscated several shipments of small arms from stateless dhows in the Arabian sea. Thousands of AK type rifles, hundreds of Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) were confiscated, along with PKM general purpose machine guns and 21 .50 caliber heavy machine guns. Included in a haul by the French, were some 60 mm mortars,  anti-tank missiles, and 64 Dragunov sniper rifles. From a March 2016 navy.mil article: The U.S. Navy Coastal Patrol ship...

Another shipment of AK-47 type rifles was seized in the Arabian sea on August 27th, 2018. The dhow carrying the cargo was in distress. It was not under power or under sail. It had no papers from any nation-state. This seems to be fairly common in the area. The boarding team  from the USS Jason Dunham found a thousand AK style rifles. No mention was made of ammunition or Rocket Propelled Grenades, another common small arm in the area. From navy.mil: The skiff was determined to be stateless following a flag verification boarding, conducted in accordance with international law....

A Chinese space force in Argentina, Russian control of Venezuelan gas and South American armies equipped with the latest Chinese and Russian hardware. Until recently, it might have sounded like the plot of a geopolitical thriller in a region once considered America’s backyard. But this is what Defense Secretary James N. Mattis faced on his visit this week to several South American nations, where economic and military posturing by Beijing and Moscow has been on the rise for the past decade. Analysts say Chinese loans in recent years have allowed authoritarian leaders to consolidate power in Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua,...

Sport Utility Rifles are very effective as home defense tools. They are easy to use, have sufficient power, and the magazine capacity to handle multiple assailants with standard capacity, commonly available magazines.  In this story from Memphis, Tennessee, a homeowner got into a gunfight with two armed burglars. From wmcactionnews.com: "I see my house being ransacked and the dog was still going hysterical in the cage," he said. "When he saw me he notified the other individual that was with him, 'hey, they are here.'" That's the moment he said when the suspected burglars pulled out guns, but he was...

The Galil is Israel's answer to the AK47, but a sleeker, more modernized version. This baby is a cross between the AK47 and an AR15. This is for the gun enthusiasts that love the robust feel but with the AR reliability and accuracy. You’re getting the best of both worlds. Many version of Galil has been around since the 50’s. The updated version is a refresh with picatinny rails for optics and lasers to custom with. The bolt operations has been borrowed from the AK making it more reliable in stress test. The modernized Galil ACE is based upon the...

I'm sure we’ve all heard about how reliable and not accurate they are, but just how true is this? There’s been a plethora of AK’s that hadn’t been cleaned in 10 years and it’s still shoots just fine. I wanted to see just how accurate these rifles truly were and exactly what they can withstand. Accuracy The AK-47 is not the most accurate weapon when compared to other assault rifles, such as the M4(AR-15). The accuracy of the AK usually when taken out of the box is steady at 4 inch group. Though over time, changes in its accuracy begin...

While elegant isn't a term usually associated with an AK-47, the C39v2 earns the descriptor. With a milled receiver machined from a solid 11-pound block of 4140 ordnance-quality steel and lightening grooves on each side, gone is the rough industrial look of the traditional stamped AK. Marry this receiver to the high-quality wooden forend furniture and Warsaw-length stock, finish the receiver and barrel inside and out in black nitrite, and you have one classy-looking rifle! The obvious upgrades to the v2 include the sights, magazine release and safety that have been changed from the original Century Arms C39. After much...

In the 1980s, China’s small arms were largely inferior to the United States and Russia. The PLA was mostly armed with the Type 56 assault rifle, a clone of the original AK-47, and the Type 56 carbine, a clone of the Soviet SKS. There was an abortive attempt to combine the characteristics of these rifles in the 1960s which culminated in the Type 63, an SKS-looking select-fire rifle that used elements of the AK operating mechanism such as a rotating bolt and fed from AK magazines. The Type 63 was too heavy and lacked a pistol grip and inline stock...

This handmade bolt action AK-47 looks to have originated from the Khyber Pass AK. The “Khyber Pass” AK47s rifles were built from scratch or from parts in the Pakistani armories of the Khyber Pass region, bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan. Your average KP AK47 is basically an AK47 chambered in 7.62X39 with a side-folding stock normally found on the AK-74 rifle.Br/> According to Ian McCallum this bolt action AK may have been just a piece that was made for looks. More than likely just a trash can gun. The entire weapon is manufactured from scratch, not using scrounged parts. While the...

From its very beginning what lacked in precision and power it has made up for in ease of use, cost, reliability, and readily available parts and ammunition. During the Cold War, the Russians sent these rifles to guerilla forces around the world and set up factories in dozens of countries. Decades later, these rifles are still found in use on battlefields everywhere. The Ak-47 is the most widely used military rifle in history because they are plentiful and cheap. Run it in the dirt, oil, snow or sand – an AK will still fire. Let us see inside the AK-47...

The rifle used by Devin Kelley was the Ruger AR-556, Texas Department of Public Safety Regional Director Freeman Martin said in a news conference. The AR-15 is more of a category than a specific weapon. It is known for being customizable, with hundreds of variants, each with its own characteristics. By some estimates, the AK-47 and its versions account for about one-fifth of the world’s firearms, the rugged and reliable weapon of choice for many armies, terror groups and drug gangs.

Ever thought of of what happens when you shoot an AK-47 under water? This video shows that while it is possible to shoot a gun under water, but is advised not to do so. The slow motion shows a great deal of hot gases pluming into the water. You can learn a lot from this one. The oxygen needed to launch the bullet is contained within the bullet, so...
