If you like your AK-47, you can keep your AK-47. That’s the message from the U.S. Treasury Department to U.S. gun owners. Despite slapping sanctions on the famed assault-rifle maker Kalashnikov last week, along with other Russian defense companies, in response to suspected Russian involvement in the shoot-down of the Malaysian jetliner over the Ukraine, the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) says U.S. owners of the weapons can still own them and resell them at gun shows so long as they don’t owe the parent company any money.

Blizzards and AK's go together like baseball and hotdogs. Since we're in the middle of another snow storm and given the recent passing of Kalashnikov, I decided to talk about a few of the things that make AK's so unique. The AK featured in this video is a Polytech Legend in 7.62x39 which I bought back in the late 1980's. The bull-pup I affectionately call the "Hebrew Hammer" is a IWI Tavor with a Mepro MOR red-dot sight.

When people see the AK-47 and the StG-44 side by side and know nothing about their internal mechanisms, the nearly universal assumption is that one is a copy of the other. The overall layout of the two rifles is strikingly similar, and one would reasonably make the assumption that Kalashnikov got his hands on a captured StG and simply rebuilt it in 7.62×39. This is, of course, not true.

he inventor of the Kalashnikov assault rifle, Mikhail Kalashnikov, has died aged 94, Russian TV reports. The automatic rifle he designed became one of the world's most familiar and widely used weapons. Its comparative simplicity made it cheap to manufacture, as well as reliable and easy to maintain. Although honoured by the state, Kalashnikov made little money from his gun. He once said he would have been better off designing a lawn mower. Mikhail Kalashnikov was admitted to hospital with internal bleeding in November.

What’s a party without some brewskies, a few burgers on the grill and a group of buddies just kicking back and assembling some of the world’s deadliest assault weapons from make-shift parts? That’s the premise of so-called rifle "build parties" that are spawning across the U.S. and in California in particular, where the gun laws are considered to be among the country’s most restrictive. Maher, of course, disagrees with Rep. Darrell Issa’s assertion that the amendment is a check against tyranny, with the old standby that you can’t fight the government because they have nuclear weapons. You have to wonder what kind of coward would not fight monsters who would nuke their own people. And if...

“Scores of Atlanta police officers moved in overnight -- some clad in riot gear, some on horseback, all under orders to clear the park of protesters,” NBC reports. “The order came from Mayor Kasim Reed, who says the last straw was a man walking around Woodruff Park Tuesday afternoon carrying an assault rifle.” [T]he man…declined to identify himself. "(The gun is) a symbol of the last line of resistance against a government that's going to try to push people out because of their ideals," he said. The man told [11Alive's Jaye] Watson the weapon was a semi-automatic version of...

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong has stated that the IHOP Shooter, Edwardo Sencion, used a Norinco Mak 90 that was illegally converted to fully automatic fire. The BATF has traced the history of the rifle to California, where it was sold five years ago. Sheriff Furlong said that the BATF told him that the rifle had been professionally converted to full auto fire. No information was given on the prior history of the pistol or the Romarm Cugir rifle that was found in the shooter’s vehicle. The Romarm Cugir rifle was commonly imported as the WASR-10, another semi automatic AK-47...

A deadly shooting rampage at a Carson City IHOP restaurant last month has prompted a call for a review of Nevada's gun laws. Assembly Judiciary Committee Chairman William Horne said it would be appropriate for lawmakers to consider changes to the state's gun regulations after a man with a history of mental illness shot 11 people with an assault weapon at the restaurant, killing three Nevada National Guard members and a civilian before killing himself. Horne, D-Las Vegas, told the Reno Gazette-Journal that while he's a gun owner who supports gun rights, he questions why citizens need to own an...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: We've got two Sharyl Attkisson bites. She was on CBS Early Show, and I can't find the transcript for number 19 but I'll be able to translate. Probably makes sense without the setup. Here it is. ATTKISSON: I would say there have been some pretty incredible developments in the past week, also documents. We haven't even had time to report on all of them. They're very sensitive documents and allegations going around. Many of them we haven't reported yet because we need to get more confirmation of them, but what you see on the surface that we...

Russia stops buying Kalashnikov The Russian army has said it will stop buying the country's famous Kalashnikov assault rifles until its designers come up with a genuinely new model. By Andrew Osborn, Moscow The current modification of the weapon – the AK-74 – was developed in the early 1970s and the defence ministry says its warehouses are "overflowing" with millions of the Soviet-era rifles, stocks of which are likely to last for a further twenty years. "The guns being offered to us are hardly any different from those in the warehouses," a defence ministry source told the daily Izvestia newspaper....
