My grandmother had a boating accident and her AK-47 got dumped into the lake. Now she’s looking for a replacement. She has $500 from winning 1st prize for pickled beets at last year’s state fair and can kick in another $700 from her kitty cat fund. So her budget is set at $1,200. The Bulgarian 7.62x39mm SAM7R-51 from Arsenal appeals to her. Atlantic Firearms has a Polish AK47 Rifle WBP Classic Wood W/ Range Pack on sale for $979 and an AK47 Rifle Battlefield Pick-Up Romy VPG for $739. Do any of you FReepers have experience with these rifles? Pros...

Soon you'll be able to buy an American-made Kalashnikov. Kalashnikov USA, which split from its Russian parent company three years ago, will start selling a semiautomatic 12-gauge shotgun called the KS-12 in February, CEO Brian Skinner told CNNMoney. The gun is being produced at a new factory in Pompano Beach, Florida, and will probably cost at least $750. Skinner said the company is still trying to determine the price, which depends on the cost of manufacturing. Later this year, the company will start selling a semiautomatic 9-millimeter pistol, with a carbine version to follow. Kalashnikov USA also has plans to...

Compared to U.S. weapons like the M-4 assault rifle, it's also more durable and uses ammunition that's easier to find. On 16 July of this year, at about 4 a.m., a man used an sport utility rifle to defend his family against a criminal crew.  The rifle was an AK-47 type of unknown model and manufacture.  The homeowner and family man who protected his castle remains unidentified. From khou.com: "They tried to break into my son's window. They managed to get one lock undone, so I come out the house," he said, asking that his identity be kept secret. He said his son, wife and newborn were...

In reading about the horrific attack by the Tunisian mass shooter, on the beach on Friday, the 26th of June, 2015, it appears that he used two weapons systems.  An AKM rifle, commonly referred to as an AK47, almost certainly in 7.62x39 caliber, with several standard 30 round magazines, was used for most of the killing.  The rifle is seen above.  It has wooden furniture, the AKM muzzle brake, and a web sling.  It is missing the standard cleaning rod from under the barrel. Update: from a colleague on freerepublic: Appears to be an Egyptian Maadi [or MISR] AKM....

I found the photo of Al Shabab marching, presumably somewhere in Somalia, interesting.  It gives a clear look at some of their weaponry.  As an organization that deals in terror, I would expect it to be extremely conscious of the image that it puts forth.   This likely explains the preponderance of  PKM light machine guns in the hands of the four rightward ranks of the front marchers (their right). These are probably the most powerful weapons that are carried on foot by Al Shabab.  I only see those four, and it appears that other troops are equipped with AK...
  • BBC: Somalia beach Guard with Leather AK Mag Pouches

As I watched a BBC news story about how order is being restored to Somalia, I could not help but notice the beach guard with his AK 47 and the very nice,  leather magazine pouches for 30 round magazines.   They seem to be attached to a load bearing system with shoulder straps.  From the uniformity of the pouches, it appears to be at least a local cottage industry.  The top flap seems to protect the magazines from sand, and I expect that in Somalia, a desert country, mold and decay are not huge problems.  I wonder how the leather...

The Kalashnikov Group has filed an appeal against a court ruling that rejected its request to terminate the legal protection of the Kalashnikov logo, a 3D image of the famous gun with an AK-47 graphic element, which belongs to the gun designer and his daughter and grandson, the Intellectual Property Court said in a statement. The ruling in favor of the designer’s family was made on December 23, 2014. The Presidium of the Intellectual Property Court said that the trademark was used by the rights holder (defendant) and other individuals who produced and marketed the gun in Russia under the...

TAMPA — At first, Dawn Bryan blamed the goat on the back porch. She figured the repeated “thunks” she heard was the animal hopping onto and off the picnic table. The noise continued and she went outside to investigate. Just then, she said, a window next to her shattered. That, she thought, was not the goat. Rather, according to Bryan and a Hillsborough County sheriff’s report, it was a neighbor and a buddy of his firing an AK 47 rifle in a back yard that abuts Bryan’s property on Porter Road in Lithia. The neighbor, Scott Radford, is a Hillsborough...

An American gun company has found a way around the anti-Russia sanctions that have banned imports of the Kalashnikov assault rifle: Make them here, in the U.S.A. The U.S.-made gun will have same name as the original: AK-47, arguably the most ubiquitous assault rifle in the world. The gun will be made by American company RWC, which is the official importer and distributor of Kalashnikov AK-47s. The company had to stop importing the guns after the U.S. imposed sanctions in July against Russia for its role in the Ukraine crisis. RWC said it is not permitted to have any contact...

NEWPORT BEACH – Two people were in the Orange County Jail this week, after police stopped them in a van with automatic rifles and ammunition. The van contained seven AK-47 assault rifles, six 30-round high-capacity 7.62 caliber magazines, two 10-round magazines and more than 350 rounds of 7.62 caliber ammunition inside, Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said. Manzella said the arrests are significant because of the weapons seized. All of the guns were modified to fire in fully automatic mode, and one had a barrel less than 16 inches in length in violation of California state law, she said....

If you like your AK-47, you can keep your AK-47. That’s the message from the U.S. Treasury Department to U.S. gun owners. Despite slapping sanctions on the famed assault-rifle maker Kalashnikov last week, along with other Russian defense companies, in response to suspected Russian involvement in the shoot-down of the Malaysian jetliner over the Ukraine, the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) says U.S. owners of the weapons can still own them and resell them at gun shows so long as they don’t owe the parent company any money.
