He may have had a captive audience on Beacon Hill, but thousands of talk show listeners are fleeing as ratings show ex-House Speaker Tom Finneran bombing in his new radio career.
With the disgraced pol behind the microphone, WRKO lost nearly one-third of its morning drive audience among the key category of 25- to 54-year-old adults this winter compared to the same time last year, according to Arbitron winter ratings figures obtained by the Herald.
Politicians do have an impact on radio. They make me turn it off, said Michael Graham, a host on rival station WTKK (96.9 FM).
Finneran - who entered the WRKO studio with much fanfare in February as the station banked on his notorious name to boost ratings - actually scored lower than his ratings-challenged predecessor Scott Allen Miller.
WRKO ranks 16th in morning drive among that important 25- to 54-year-old demographic - the same ranking the station had at this time last year with Miller at the helm - but it lost 19,300 listeners when Finneran took the stage.
In morning drive last winter, WRKO had a 2.1 share with 59,500 average weekly listeners among the key money-making demo monitored by advertisers with a 2.1 share, but fell to a 1.6 share with 40,200 listeners this winter.
Finneran could not be reached last night but WRKO program director Jason Wolfe said, I have no expectations in the early stages. The show is significantly better now than it was when he started. Its going to continue to be a work in progress.

Finneran Bores'em - cover of Herald ping .
What in the world has happened to ‘RKO? They couldn’t find a back-ally stumblebum with nothing to do, so they hired Finneran? Sheesh.
He’ll get two more ratings books,If the slide continues(which I’m sure it will) The Felon will get the ax.
Yeah, Brian Maloney of RadioEqualizer and SaveWRKO.com was
right! Great move by the folks at ‘RKO; kind of like what would happen if Theo Epstein paid $100 million for a pitcher
who goes 2-15 with an 8.37 ERA, or a batter (same price)
who slugs a .125 average.
Maybe ‘RKO can bring in someone a bit more ethical, too,
like Billy Bulger (/ sarcasm)
Pinging everyone on the Howie list about this. Have you heard the Finneran promo where he slams Howie (he’s a fraud,
he’s a crybaby, etc.)? Well, Finneran, you’re a FAILURE
>>Politicians do have an impact on radio. They make me turn it off, said Michael Graham, a host on rival station WTKK (96.9 FM).
Though where Graham works would make a difference; if
Graham worked for ‘RKO, say, in the slot after Finneran,
that would have read, “He needs time to build his audience.
I think he has an interesting show and I love listening to it as I drove to ‘RKO in the morning...”
Hey Feinberg, how’s the lead-in ratings for ya? :)
Based on about five minutes of listening. Finneran speaks in a boring monotone and reflexively assuming a condescending attitude towards callers. He mistakes “listeners” for “taxpayers”. Sorry, Tommy, you can’t send the State Police to arrest people if they won’t listen to you and you can’t have your “Electoral Engineers” remove the competition from the dial.
Yeah, I've heard that one and the one where some Dem pol hack threatens to "take Howie for a ride" such that "three leave, two come back" because "these Staties (police) are good guys, they're not sayin' anything."
Not a little creepy. Not at all funny.
I haven’t gotten around to draggin myself up out of the bed to catch “The Felon”yet.
I miss WRKO in the morning - I used to listen 24/7 on the net or in the car when I’m in the eastern part of the state.
Now I’m listening to WCRN on the net - also WTIC 10:80 am out of Hartford, CT is very, very good in the morning. Jim Vicevich is excellent - he’s on from 10-noon.
Don’t listen to WTIC after 3pm - unless you like those Finneran-types.
and Howie sent a letter to a judge saying that he was threatened...
...and that this may violate the “probation” he’s on...
...gone by Labor Day? by November? wish he could be gone now.
‘RKO’s site is actually poking fun at the article. Under
Finneran’s spot (some written text which is changed daily) it now says: “Tom will be searching the papers for more photos and front-page stories of himself. Let him know if you find any.”
His show’s actually not bad (except that his guest list is apparently provided by the DNC!). He’s a Dem not a moonbat. I like him more than I liked Scotto . . . or dislike him less. He’s more polite to callers he disagrees with than Scotto was.
He had Kerry on by phone this morning. Unfortunately ;-) I didn’t hear Kerry because I was running water to wash dishes. Kerry (wisely IMO) didn’t take calls, but I was happy to note the first caller out of the box after him expostulated, “I am so glad he’s not president — and I’m so glad I never voted for him!” and went on in a way to gladden the heart!
It still was a shabby way to treat Scotto, though I didn’t like him, and I think the rating reflect that, as well as the anger about the hiring.
