"Old People Suck" Sign Upsets Seniors In Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Three words on a cardboard sign outside a luxury downtown high rise have senior citizens outraged. One senior was so upset she took a picture outside The Vue at Lake Eola, on the corner of Rosalind and Robinson streets.

Some senior citizens were across the street in a small rally when they noticed the construction workers laughing at them. Then they looked by the fence and saw a sign they consider very offensive. The words were scrawled in bold white paint on cardboard.

Sandra Taylor, 64, stood across the street and could feel the sign shouting at her.

"The next thing we knew, we looked over and he had made a sign, holding it, said 'Old People Suck,'" Taylor said.

The construction worker was standing inside the site of one of Orlando's newest, most luxurious high rises in development, The Vue at Lake Eola. Taylor said not only did the worker hold up the sign, but she and other senior citizens were ridiculed.

"It was a lot of laughing, pointing fingers and giggling and hoopla," said Claudia Platt.

Taylor and Platt were a part of a small group of seniors protesting immigration reform across the street.

Eyewitness News showed the picture to construction workers at the site. Some were amused.

"I'm old! I don't suck!" one said.

Then, Eyewitness News went to The Vue's sales center. A woman there was shocked to see the picture.

"No, I have no idea," she said.

The Florida Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons sent Eyewitness News a statement after looking at the snapshot: "AARP believes it is no more okay to be ageist than it is racist or sexist."

Turner Construction, the company that oversees the project, said, because of the incident, they're letting all of the workers on the project know that kind of behavior is unacceptable.

John Edwards was going to take their case but then he heard one of them mutter, “Growing old is not for sissies.”

I think this is hilarious. If I were the old folks being mocked I’d have made my own sign that ridiculed the construction workers. (maybe an illegal upset with the protest?)

That sign is offensive, but it’s nothing that a lighter and a shotgun can’t fix...

I do believe that if the construction workers want to play, the seniors ought to whip out their game and say “bring it, punk”!

Indeed. Fortunately for those who mock the elderly, growing old is a matter of choice. /s

In my youth (50’s) I, and my cronies, often made fun of ol’ folks. Now that I are one, I think the whole thing funny. Tradition goes on.

Big difference … if my parents caught me making fun of elderly folks, I would develop welts on my diarrhea.

I find solace in the fact that all those that make fun of ol’ folks, will someday be ol’ folks themselves … I shall be laughing from heaven. ;-)

I am fairly surprised that it was not four words:

"La vieja gente aspira!"

I doubt they would like the “Snowbirds, the other white meat” bumper stickers around here, then.
