Using marijuana increases the risk of one day developing a psychotic illness such as schizophrenia, according to a study that provides some of the strongest evidence yet linking the drug to a mental disorder. *** The researchers found that marijuana users had a 41 percent increased chance of developing psychosis marked by symptoms of hallucinations or delusions later in life than those who never used the drug. The risk rose with heavier consumption.

Marjuana advocates have in the past claimed that such studies do not account for the possible differences between users and non-uers (presumably users are more likely to be nutty in the first place). This study shows a correlation between dosage and risk, which better nails down the causality.

Meanwhile, the Toronto Globe & Mail is running an on-line poll, asking if this new evidence worries you. So far, it worries only 20%. The rest of weed-smoking Canada doesn't care. Like, dude, light up and forget about it, and listen to those voices!

So, from what I gathered from the other thread, 5 in 1000 people in the general population are schitzo.

So, if it is a 40% raise in the pot smoking population, 7 in 1000 people there are schitzo.

2 more people out of a thousand are schitzo. Run for the hills!!!!

But it sure sounds like a terrible thing when ‘40 percent’ is used. Who knew it was easy to take add to a small number and get a large percentage increse out of it?

This is the second such study. There was a Swedish study saying that thinking very often became LIKE a schizophrenic from MJ use.

Notice most of the replies don’t think anything long term happens to the mind on MJ. Having no insight is also a mental illness find. MJ biggest change in thinking is that you are no different or better thinking with it.

Get ready to see the marijuana filled Freepers give more proof of this in the following posts...

Whenever a government decreases or proposes to decrease the penalty for marijuana usage, these studies come out of the woodwork. You could graph it on a chart to show the correlation.

One thing all marijuana drug warriors have in common: they are pathological liars.

No kidding. Back in the 60s, this was such a commonly known fact that everybody used to joke about it.

The other thing that was commonly known was the disastrous effect of pot smoking on one’s lung capacity - I had a friend, when I was 16, who smoked so much dope she wheezed like an old man when she had to go up a flight of stairs.
