The pictures below are from the source Web site linked above, but see the first comment for a new Web site, PhotoVolcanica, with some spectacular high-resolution volcano photos. The reason I'm posting these pictures is due to inspiration (fortunately not inhalation) of a picture of this place in the "Volcanoes 4 (Hot Springs and Fumaroles)" section of PhotoVolcanica.
Crystallizing sulphur stalactites
How much do you get paid for this?
Molten red sulfur! Just like on Io (Jupiter's sulfurous moon)
Raw and picturesque, as long as you're upwind
Use the Full Index, go to "Daytime Eruptions", and about halfway down there are two very nice lava lake pictures from Hawaii and Erta Ale.
Great pics, cogitator - thanks for the thread.

Where is this volcano located? I wanna make sure I never buy a house within 50 miles of it.
Use the coordinates in Google Earth (or just maps.google.com) and you'll see where it is (gotta zoom out with Google Maps). Actually promoted as a touristy place. Beaches, temples, waterfalls -- not sure about the safety of the sociopolitical environment, though, and the geology, well...
East Java tourist map (#28)
There's a Mt. Merapi nearby, but this is not the bad Mount Merapi in central Java.
And if the stuff is pure sulphur, then there should not be much of a stink (being nit-picky).
According to the caption, unclogging the sulfur pipes. They put pipes into the mountain, and molten sulfur flows out and crystallizes, and then they collect it. Check the source link.
The fumes may not smell bad, but they're very acidic and corrosive to the lungs.

Appreciated.
show this to your mom
That is really, really neat.
At last, a job no American wants! Don’t you know they smell bad when they go home at the end of the day!
Dangerous work.
