LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. -- A former Laurens County teacher pleaded guilty Thursday to having sex with at least five students.
Allenna Williams Ward, 23, a seventh-grade language arts teacher at Bell Middle School, had sex with several students in cars, parks, a hotel and at the school.
She pleaded guilty Thursday to six charges -- three second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and three lewd acts on a minor. Family members and her attorneys accompanied her as she made an emotional statement to the court.
She said, "Today, I publicly admit my guilt and would like to apologize. I sincerely apologize for the effects of my actions."
Clinton police said that Ward had sex with at least five boys: three 14-year-olds, and two 15-year-olds. The students were at Bell Middle and another school that was not named.
Ward was fired when the allegations were made public in March.
While awaiting trial, Ward has been required to wear a tracking device and she was allowed no contact with her alleged victims or their families. She has only been allowed to leave her home to go to church or visit her lawyer. She was not allowed to use a cell phone.
Ward's family was required to pay for the electronic monitoring device, including a $150 administrative fee plus a $70 a week fee.
Thursday, Jerry Peace, 8th Circuit Solicitor, said, "She was in a position of authority. She had the trust of the community to teach kids right and do what you need to do around children to let them grow to be responsible adults. She violated that trust."
Ward will be sentenced at a later date. She could face a sentence of up to 105 years in prison.

I am 62 years old and if I'm not "grown up" yet, I'm afraid it's too late. In the past, I have joined in the game of innocent or guilty based on the looks of the woman.
I now hereby repent of it and won't do it again. I guess I am growing up after all.
I have two sons who are 33 and 34 years old and both members of this forum, if this kind of thing had happened to them when they were 12-16 years old I would have been plenty pissed and ready to see the female teacher do some hard time. On the other hand, had it happened to me at that age I would have considered myself the luckiest boy on earth. I'm not a boy anymore and it's time to put away my childish fantasies

Yes, a racial angle will complicate the public trial if not the official one.

It isn’t an epidemic. We have more than a million teachers in this country. A handful of female teachers doing this does not a trend make. The only reason we think one exists is because the few cases that do come up get 24/7 coverage on cable “news. “

I don’t know. If she’s my 8th or 9th grade teacher and was really sincere, I’d prolly hit it.
Not so strange - just a child seeking out peers to have sex with. People assume that some magical maturity is conferred at age 18, but these days there just isn't all that much difference between these younger teachers and their students. They listen to the same music, watch the same TV shows, and have all of the same cultural references. There isn't the gulf between them that might have existed a few decades ago.
Schools might be wise to consider limiting the teaching of high school students to their staff members age 40 and older and let these younger teachers work with younger kids.
