TEACHERS should NOT be prosecuted for having sex with pupils over 16, claim union bosses. The NASUWT says it is UNFAIR to treat teachers who have affairs with students who are over 16 as sex offenders, insisting all they are guilty of is an “error of professional judgement”. In 2001 it became illegal for teachers to have any intimate or sexual affair with any pupil in their school under 18. If found guilty of doing so, the teacher would face instant dismissal, be made to sign the sex offenders register and possibly face jail. But NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates...

Sacramento, Aug 11, 2008 / 11:04 pm (CNA).- A California judge has ruled against Planned Parenthood and its allies who challenged the content of a voter information pamphlet’s arguments in support of Proposition 4, a ballot measure requiring abortionists to notify at least one adult relative before performing an abortion on a minor. The arguments reference the story of “Sarah,” a 15-year-old who died in 1994 after suffering complications from a secretly obtained legal abortion, in addition to stories of other underage girls who obtained abortions without their parents’ knowledge.Opponents of the pamphlet’s content argued that Sarah’s story should...

Proof that statutory rape laws and prosecutions have gone too far--Paul Briggs apparently "feared he would be reported to police for under-age sex with Kyra Applin," so he hung himself. Their ages? 17 and 15. From the BBC's Teen father-to-be hanged himself: A teenage boy hanged himself after his 15-year-old girlfriend became pregnant, an inquest has heard. Paul Briggs, 17, of Ferndale, Rhondda, feared he would be reported to police for under-age sex with Kyra Applin, the hearing in Miskin was told. The couple told their families they wanted the pregnancy to go ahead but he hid his fears about...

In January 2008, a minor in foster care in Richmond, procured an abortion while receiving support services from Commonwealth Catholic Charities (CCC). An investigation of this unfortunate event revealed that some members of CCC staff assisted the minor in preparations leading up to the abortion, and that one member of staff signed the consent form necessary for the minor to have the abortion. The minor was taken to and from the abortion facility by a person associated with CCC. Neither agency nor diocesan funds were used to pay for the procedure. A subsequent investigation also revealed that about two months...

What makes a grown woman pursue a guy who gets carded at R-rated movies, lives with his parents who give him an allowance and, who if your actions are revealed, would ruin your reputation and possibly land you in jail? Theories abound. Some might surprise you. Like how mentally, they are about the same age.Sexual abuse involving older women and teen boys is an underreported crime, one that experts say has been largely ignored by the public, legal system and academic researchers for reasons including sexual double standards and evidence suggesting teen boys often are willing participants. But that attitude...

Apologizing for his actions in a case where he was accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl, Nathan St. Pierre told a judge on Monday that he stood before the court "broken and contrite." On Monday, Vanderburgh Circuit Court Judge Carl Heldt sentenced St. Pierre, 26, to seven years in the Indiana Department of Correction, to be followed by 10 years as a registered sex offender. St. Pierre previously pleaded guilty to three class B felony charges of sexual misconduct with a minor. He was accused of having a sexual relationship with a girl who was a...

In broadening the legal definition of rape, Maryland's highest court has rightly expanded women's rights, recognizing the importance of their being able to assert control at times of particular vulnerability. The seven judges may have relied on different legal reasoning, but they were unanimous in concluding that a woman can change her mind and withdraw consent during sexual intercourse - and that a man has to honor her decision. Making that more clear in the law is a welcome advance that should help juries as they weigh the facts in individual cases. Rape generally involves physical or psychological power and...

A listed speaker at the MLA forum, Princeton Professor Jeffrey Nunokawa was replaced at the last moment by Professor Ellis Hanson of Cornell University. Accuracy and Academia awarded Hanson the number one slot in its ’98-’99 “Top Politically Correct” professors for his defense of teaching pedophilia in the...

A speech by abortionist Alberto Hodari, captured on video and posted on YouTube and the Students for Life of America Web site, has put the controversial physician in the spotlight once more. In 2004, a 15-year-old girl, Tamia Russell, died the day after getting an abortion at Hodari's Detroit clinic, WomanCare. The medical examiner called the infection that killed Russell, who was six months pregnant, a "normal" post-abortion condition. In 2007, Hodari spoke to the media about the "dangers" of banning partial-birth abortion. The clinic reported Russell claimed to be 19 and was brought to the clinic by her 24-year-old...

I've little sympathy for Debra Lafave (pictured above), who at 23 statutorily raped a 14-year-old boy. She got the female sentencing discount and did not go to jail because she's a woman. A five-year study conducted by a Kansas State University professor found that male teachers are likely to get 15 to 20 years in prison for sexual relations with students, whereas female teachers usually are placed on probation or go to prison for one to three years. Paul Logli, president of the National District Attorneys Association, says: "There is no question it's more likely that as a case winds...

After King Middle School moves to offer birth control, the District Attorney says schools must report anyone under age 14 who's having sex. Portland's school-based health centers have not been reporting all illegal sexual activity involving minors as required by law, but they will from now on, city officials said Thursday. Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie Anderson questioned the health centers' reporting practices after the Portland School Committee decided last week to offer prescription birth control at the King Middle School health center. The King Student Health Center has offered comprehensive reproductive health care, including providing condoms and testing for...

Just as schools have a duty to act as a substitute parent protecting children from harm on school grounds, county youth detention centers must keep juvenile prisoners safe from sexual predators, a state appeals court ruled yesterday. A unanimous three-judge Appellate Division panel said a former inmate could pursue a lawsuit seeking money damages against the Mercer County Youth Detention Center for failing to protect him from a female worker's sexual abuse. "A county detention center ... operates in the traditional role of a guardian toward its ward," Judge John Holston wrote in a 30-page decision ordering that the case...

I'm opposed to prison sentences for certain statutory rape situations--in many countries, a 21-year-old man having a relationship with a 17-year-old woman is perfectly normal. A friend's grandparents recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary, and it was publicized in local papers, as it should be, since it's such an achievement. But looking at the story and doing a little math made me realize that if the two of them had gotten married yesterday, he would go to jail--he was 21 and she was 17 when they got married in 1922. This is absurd. On the other had, if it's a...

A judge has ordered that Genarlow Wilson be freed from prison, where he has spent more than two years for receiving consensual oral sex from a 15-year-old girl when he was 17. Monroe County Superior Court Judge Thomas Wilson also amended Wilson's felony conviction this morning to a misdemeanor without the requirement that he register as a sex offender. Wilson's lawyer, B.J. Bernstein, appealed to the judge Wednesday to free him from prison, arguing that his 10-year prison sentence and inclusion on the state's sex offender registry is grossly disproportionate and violates the Constitution. Bernstein also pointed to how the...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Infections with the virus that causes genital herpes are common among teen girls, a new study shows. DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland's Supreme Court ruled on Friday that a rapist released earlier this week through a legal loophole should be re-arrested, easing pressure on a government scrambling to address the public outcry over his release. The poll also found that 64% were in favor of spousal notification before abortion, while 34% opposed spousal notification. Although the majority of respondents opposed an all-out constitutional ban on abortion, more...
