FORT HUACHUCA — Residents of historic military homes on this Southern Arizona Army post are opening their doors to visitors from 1 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 2 for the annual Holiday Tour of Historic Homes.

For the past 17 years, the fort has marked the beginning of the holiday season with the special tour.

The “Old Post” area, a national historic landmark, will be lit by the soft glow of luminaries as the public is given a rare glimpse at the interior of these homes.

The tour is organized the fort Huachuca Community Spouses’ Club. Proceeds from the tour benefit their scholarship program.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $8 at the Fort Huachuca Museum and Apache Flats RV Park. In Sierra Vista, they are available at the Sierra Vista Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, Sierra Vista chamber of commerce and Safeway.

Tickets also will be on sale the day of the tour for $10.

The ticket price includes an opportunity to win a handmade Christmas quilt.

The homes on the tour remain as they were constructed more than 100 years ago. The foundations for these historic houses were laid in 1883 after Gen. William T. Sherman approved the construction of a permanent facility at Fort Huachuca.

Each of the featured homes is named after an important individual who was instrumental in the development and planning of Fort Huachuca and the Army.

The tour begins at the Fort Huachuca Museum. Tour participants can enjoy live entertainment and people in 1870s attire. During the event, the fort’s historic museum and gift shop also will be open.

This walking tour will require climbing of stairs. Homes on the tour are not wheelchair accessible. Golf carts will be available to transport persons who are unable to walk the distance of the tour.

No backpacks, strollers, cameras or video equipment will be allowed inside the houses. Children younger than 10 are not permitted on the tour.
