My set's on the blink, was hoping some of my Freeper brethren who might be in the TV/electronics repair biz could help.
We left the house for a while today and left the TV on ... we normally do that for security reasons so that folks coming around will hear a TV and think someone is at home. It was working fine when we left. When we came home, it was not working fine.
I would say we're getting probably a six-inch strip of picture ... that's measured vertically, horizontally it stretches all the way across the screen ... a bit closer to the top of the screen than the bottom. What we are seeing is probably the top six inches of what would be the normal picture, a bit distorted but still recognizable as such.
Does anyone here have a clue what might be going on with this, and how big a fix it would be? I know this is the perfect time to upgrade to a more modern TV, but with Christmas around the corner that would be an "ouch," plus we are limited at least for the time being as to what size of TV we can accomodate in our living room, and aren't really inclined to go to the trouble of changing that at the moment. We have an old fashioned entertainment center, where the TV sits inside the cabinet, unlike the newer ones where you sit the TV with its pedestal on the top, and this Sanyo, at about 26.5 inches wide, is absolutely the widest unit we can get into that space, and we're not interested in downsizing to a 19-inch widescreen that would be about like a computer monitor. There is a similar Sanyo 27-inch TV available now, only it's 30.5 inches wide and it just ain't gonna work.
At the same time, however, if it's going to be a $100 or $200 fix for this TV, then you have to consider whether it's worth doing that, since the unit itself didn't cost all that much.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Can you see this image?
Very tempting, considering that there’s such dreck being broadcast now that I rarely watch the thing. “She who must be obeyed” is the one who’s raising Cain, because she’s afraid she’ll miss all her mushy Christmas movies on Lifetime and Family that she’s already seen umpteen times. And then there’s the complete 11-disc set of “The World at War” that a little birdie has told me I’m getting for Christmas, and if the TV doesn’t work, the DVD player is useless as well. :)
maybe what you need is...
...a TV healer!
Sounds like your vertical oscillator.
Big fix or minor fix on top of the bench charge?
Do you have a cat or another critter running around the house? Could have changed settings.
I have Sanyo tube TV’s everywhere and they have worked for year’s so thinking your remote has been corrupted.
both of my tvs are over 20 years old. one of them has developed a new feature my wife calls rainbow vision- the image is distorted into a rainbow shape with all the colors of an actual rainbow. it’s quite a sight and has changed the way we view television, as you can imagine.
anyway, about the problem with your tv- i’ve noticed that i have had a bit of success when i unplug the tv, then plug in the tv, then unplug the tv, then plug in and turn on the tv, then turn off and unplug the tv, then plug in and turn on the tv, then fiddle with the rabbit ears, then switch channels a few dozen times, then unplug the tv while its still on, then turn off and plug in the tv, then turn on the tv, and then finally turn off the tv and go to my computer.
i know, that didn’t really help. sorry.
Considering that TV repair shops have gone the way of the dinosaur, might be cheaper and more expeditious to buy a new one.
There are still a couple in my neck of the woods, guys who do good work. But as I said, if I’m looking at spending what the TV’s worth to get it fixed, I have to raise the same questions you did.
I don’t think it’s the remote, it’s doing it with multiple remotes and even without using the remote.
Lots of folks who can fix things hang out on Yahoo! and answer questions that people post, so you might also try posting your question there.
Other than these things, I can only wish you the best and say that Sam's Club has some wonderful deals on LCD and plasma TVs.
Considering the age of the TV, it’s probably minor, but the problem is finding someone locally to fix it. You’re probably going to have to ship it somewhere, and that = $$.
As I noted above, there are still some shops around my area who have in-house techs, so I’m lucky there. I think I’ll haul it to one of them Monday and have them take a look at it since it seems likely to be an easy fix. I’d love to go flat screen/LCD, just not at this particular moment in time with Christmas bills stacking up. :)
Your vertical deflection amplifier is toast.
You may have noticed the general absence of tv repair shops lately?
It’s usually been cheaper to just buy a new one, until the mega-costly HDTV crap came along. We’re having a problem with our 27” Toshiba’s tuner; when it gets hot, it just goes on vacation for a while. Can’t find a replacement tuner anywhere :o(
OK, have you tried the unplug it and wait alittle then plug it back in?
If he has a picture at all, the oscillator is ok, its the amplification that’s out.
Speaking of TV repair, does anyone else remember going down to the local drug or hardware store with a hand full of tubes to use the tester?
In the process of it ...
