MD Phenom Black Edition parts are just now hitting the streets and we should see them on retail shelves very soon. We get our hands on one and take it for a quick spin so you guys will know what to expect from the unlocked Phenom.

With a little help from our friends overseas, we were able to get our hands on one of the first retail Phenom 9600 Black Edition Processors available. For those of you that are not in the know, the “Black Edition” processors for AMD have unlocked CPU clock multipliers. Our Phenom 9600 runs at a stock clock of 2.3GHz which is 11.5X200MHz. Being "unlocked," we can change that 11.5 to almost any number we want. We heavily petitioned AMD to deliver a Black Edition Phenom CPU to enthusiasts because we think this is the only way to somewhat satiate brand loyal fans, considering the Phenom’s somewhat disappointing performance out of the gate.

We ran all tests with the TLB "fix" turned off. On that note, I think there have been a few folks in the community that have used this as a sort of red herring since they did not get exactly what they wanted from AMD PR at launch. Show me one person that can actually show me the error impacting desktop computing. They can all bitch about it, but they cannot show their readers the error because they cannot produce it. I think AMD has handled this issue very badly. The fact is that the TLB fix can be turned off in the BIOS with absolutely no negative impact to the desktop consumer.

The AMD Overdrive tool will let me set CPU clock multipliers from 5 - 47. Our part would run at 3.2GHz, just not reliably. Also our Phenom was not stable at 1.55v but was at 1.50v, so there seems to be a sweet spot there with our part.

As for overclocking the other buses, I don't think that is going to have any impact on real world computing experience due to the buses already being so wide it is almost impossible to saturate them now on a desktop system.

The price is certainly right, now let’s wait for an able MoBo that doesn’t say MSI on it.

Gigabyte has several....in the 200+ range....

Was thinking about taking my ECS A770M-a back to Frys and getting an MSI....

The Abit AN52V...uses an Nvidia 520 chipset ,...might be better for us Linux lovers....

AN52...not sure what happened to the V?
