Downstate Beagle 'Uno' Named Best In Show At Westminster, Helping Boost His Breed

A dog with downstate roots is now America's numero uno.

CBS 2's Vince Gerasole introduces us to this year's Westminster Kennel Club's best in show.

The underdog is now the top dog as a beagle named Uno becomes the first of his breed ever to win the title of Westminter's best in show.

Showing as much spunk as style, Uno's barking echoed through the concourse. His well-coiffed competitors sat there speechless as the crowds uncharacteristically jumped to their feet and cheered.

"He's the people's dog, that explains it --- with a face like that I don't know how you can pass it up," said Uno's owner, Aaron Wilkerson. "He's been a great little dog."

Beagle lovers all over the nation are now celebrating.

"I did have swagger in my step," said beagle owner Sharyn Hosemann.

"Fred and I were very proud when we went for our morning walk and saw our neighbors and were actually congratulated by a neighbor," she said.

Not afraid to make some noise, beagles are an average Joe kind of dog. They're big sniffers too. A skill they have really for hunting down rabbits.

At P.A.W.S. Chicago's main adoption office we office found three classic beagles ready for adoption.

"The beautiful thing about beagles is they want to be a part of the family, they want to be a part of the action," said PAWS Chicago Executive Director Rochelle Michalek. "They're very, very loyal to their families."

If you're looking for a frisky friend who's not afraid to get his paws dirty and have some fun, you can see why beagles are becoming the dog to finally have their day.

Mine was a great watch dog. She’d bark when someone came to the door...then run behind the couch.

I think I saw Uno in one of the Eukanuba shows on TV. Outstanding little pooch.

I loved Uno last night. What a character!

I have a little black and white beagle mix who carries herself much like Uno. She’s 18 years old, blind, going deaf, but very active and happy.

Let’s hear it for Uno!

My 7-year old daughter wants a Beagle. I’m considering it.

My dog is beagle/jack russell mix. She does the same thing. Barks to let me know someone is at the door then goes and hides under the kitchen table, her “safe place”. LOL She’s aggressive/passive :)

“Uno becomes the first of his breed ever to win the title of Westminter’s best in show.”

I do believe this is a falsehood. Why is it being spread around? I thought Beagle won in ‘39.

I grew up with beagles, my dad did alot of rabbit hunting.

They are one of the very best breeds to have with children.. being smaller, they require less maintenance. They are very social and dedicated, and it is pretty hard to provoke them.

They had a listing of the Best of Class winners against Best of Show winners, the beagle had never won.

I just went to the source. It’s true, they never won a Best in Show (BIS). At least, that means from 1907 as there was no BIS before.
