Please pray for my dog: she's critically ill [Update: Daisy has passed away]

Edited on 03/28/2008 8:29:12 PM PDT by Admin Moderator. [history]

My beloved dog, Daisy, is critically ill. She has Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, a disorder that causes her body to attack and kill healthy red blood cells. Her blood levels are well below the normal/low range and her vet now has her in 'critical'. She will have surgery in the next 48 to remove a foreign object she ate- not sure its related to the IMHA at this point.

Sad update:

After a valiant fight against Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, Daisy succumbed to her illness this morning. While her mind and spirit were willing, her body could no longer fight. I was with her when she passed, and she passed very peacefully. She is now reunited with her feline buddy, Whammy, and is surely chasing squirrels in Heaven, as she waits for me at the Rainbow Bridge. She was the most incredible dog I've every owned. She was my best friend.

Thank you to all who have offered their kind words and prayers during this difficult few weeks.

Daisy: Nov. 2nd, 1998 - March 28th, 2008

Daisy will also begin injections (at $100 a shot, three times a week) to stimulate her bone marrow to produce new red blood cells. I want to give her every chance to fight this and win, even if the vet isn't sure she'll pull through. For almost 10 years, Daisy has been there for me, through all my trials and triumphs. I couldn't even think of not being here for her now- regardless of the cost.

Please say a prayer for my beloved Daisy.

Your darling Daisy sure has all of my prayers. I know very well how hard it is to go through what is happening to you and Daisy right now, but rest assured, whatever the outcome for Daisy, know that her life with you is the best she could have had. And for that you are to be commended. Some day another one will come along that you can love and care for too. How lucky that dog will be.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words and prayers. For those of you who know me from posting, you know how much I love my pets- especially my dog. This has been a hard 10 months... I lost my cat, Dusty, in June 2007 and then her buddy, who died from grief, three months later. Now, I have Daisy and one cat- the fewest animals I've ever owned.

Daisy is the perfect dog. I have never had a dog like her. She is exceptionally intelligent, kind, and loving. She loves everyone and everything. She even stood guard over a painted turtle I took in, and protected it from the cats. When I nursed a ten day old kitten to eight weeks old, she guarded him like he was her pup... and played with him as her grew stronger and more bold. Last summer during our daily walk, she protected me from an aggressive dog, sacrificing her nose for me. To this day, whenever we walk past that farm, she moves to my left side to be between me and the farm dog.

She was sent from Heaven to be my friend, my companion, my furbaby for ten years, so I can understand why God would want to call her home. Just not yet...

What a coincidence. My 15.5 yo Shepherd mix is having surgery to remove a softball sized tumor in her abdomen Wednesday. I came home at lunch to find it had hemorrhaged. Vet says she's otherwise fine and if she survives surgery she could live a yr or two. I thought she could manage to get by without surgery since it's benign but now that it's bleeding out it's not an option. So I can certainly appreciate your emotions right now and hope it goes well.

You can see part of tumor here in this picture.

My Fargo had stitches removed just today.
Didn’t know until the biopsy came back if the tumor was benign or not.
Luckily it was.

Nothing sweeter than the heart of an old dog.

Prayers for your Daisy! Hug!

Dutch shepherd + lab mix? Whatever else she is, Daisy is a beautiful girl. Good taste in politics, too. :o)

Will certainly keep you both in my thoughts. You’ve had to say goodbye to too many old friends lately. I hope she tolerates the surgery and heals quickly so she may spend more happy years with you.

Keep us apprised.

When our dog (a mutt we had adopted from the pound) was 4 years old he was diagnosed with IMHA. We didn’t know he was sick until one day he just collapsed. We rushed him to the vet, and the vet told us he probably wouldn’t make it because his blood count was so low. He suggested transfusions as a last resort but we couldn’t afford them ($2000 per day for several days.)

So we brought him home thinking we’d make him comfortable and just see what happened. The vet prescribed steroids and antibiotics for a few days. We hand fed him and used a syringe for water because he was soooo weak, but eventually he began to regain his strength and his blood counts improved. It was several weeks till he could even manage to stand on his own.

But I’m happy to report that even though the vet told us he’d probably not survive, he is alive and well 7 years later. He’s now 11 going on 12, and can keep up with our other dogs when they go for walks. Dogs are amazing creatures. Hope your Daisy recovers!
