A pooch in Burlington, Iowa, is taking care of nine kittens that lost their own mother.
"She does everything momma cat would do," said Angie Beard, a worker at the Des Moines County Humane Society. "She's excellent."
Lilly Lou, as shelter workers call her, is nursing nine kittens, the results of three litters that all lost their mothers, according to WQAD-TV in Moline, Ill.
Beard initially gave Lilly two kittens, hoping she would take to them while the rest were bottle fed.
Shelter workers were hopeful that Lilly would accept more kittens as their chances for survival being bottle fed weren't very high.
Lilly, who recently had six puppies of her own and is expecting another litter, immediately took to her new charges, which Beard and other shelter workers have dubbed "pittens," or puppy kittens.
"If one of them crawls out of bed, she'll follow it around the room, toss it up in the air and then take it back to the bed," Beard said. "She cleans them just like her own puppies; she feeds them just like her own puppies."
The kittens are three and four weeks old now and will stay with Lilly until they are six weeks old.
Wait a darn minute now. I rescue dogs, and it seems a bit irresponsible to me that this shelter hasn’t spade the dog. Just had a litter and is expecting another? Who’s going to find homes for all those puppies? It’s fortunate the dog took the kitties in, but what are they doing in that shelter? They’re suppose to PREVENT pregnancies, yes?
Dang, that’s cool.
Do kittens that nurse from a dog.. meow in a more bass tone?..
It's tragic - they chase themselves.
I assume they got the dog when she was already pregnant, though if she had several weeks to go, they should have gone ahead and spayed her anyway. With millions of healthy dogs euthanized for lack of homes every year, might as well euthanize a litter of nowhere-near-born puppies.
Inquiring minds want to know! ;-)
I don’t know. The article said she had recently had a litter and was pregnant again. That tells me the shelter staff saw the first litter and didn’t spade her so she was impregnated again. Just seemed to me that someone overlooked something.
I have a beautiful (people stop me in the street and ask if I will let my dog mate with theirs, wish I had his luck!)pit bull that I will not mate for that reason. Unless I wanted the puppies or knew where they were all going, I am not interested in making more pits to be euthanized.
I like your tagline; I’ll join the PitBull Defender’s club. :-P
So...those Planned Kittyhood condoms ARE deliberately defective!!!
o/~ My father sells condoms to sailors.
My mother pokes holes with a pin.
My sister performs the abortions.
My G-d, how the money rolls in! o/~
They also tree each other.
Sounds like a pitten mill to me!

Had bookmarked both the short story and video from my local news source, WFSB’s website. That dog did a very loving act. She also saved the lives of 9 kittens. =^..^=
Thanks for posting it here. =^..^=
Nice of the dog...but I’m not liking the image I get.
Dang! That is sweet of the doggy mom...I love a good story.
